Although online data entry jobs are one of the most sought after home-based opportunities, there’s not always a ton of options out there.  And sometimes, an advertisement may turn out to be a scam.

But, don’t worry, there are several companies that are known for hiring remote workers for data entry jobs. Curious to know where all the legitimate online data entry jobs are? Read on to find out!

What is involved with Online Data Entry Jobs?

It’s pretty simple: Online data entry jobs require you to key data from one source into another. The data you key can be letters, numbers, or a combination of the two — it just depends on the project you’re working on.

What Does it Take to Be Good at Data Entry?

To make the most of your efforts, you’ll need to be able to type quickly and accurately. Depending on the type of data entry involved, you may need to be comfortable using your keyboard’s number pad.

In addition to fast and accurate keying abilities, you’ll also need to be able to read quickly. You might be pulling data from a spreadsheet, document, or even handwritten notes.

Many online data entry jobs are paid by the number of correct keystrokes. So the greater your ability to quickly read/scan something and key it, the more money you’ll make.

Where Can I Find Legitimate Online Data Entry Jobs?

As popular as online data entry jobs are, there aren’t as many out there as you might think. In fact, it’s rather difficult to find companies that routinely have data entry jobs available. But, here are 7 top companies that offer legitimate home-based data entry jobs:

1. Axion Data

First up, let’s learn about Axion. This company is a well-known source of online data entry jobs. However, Axion is rarely hiring. In fact, its hiring page states:

There are currently no openings for data entry operators; however, that can change as we get new clients.  Our business is very cyclical, and there is no guarantee you will ever be contacted; nevertheless, you may choose to register with us for future consideration.

Also, Axion Data asks applicants to pay a registration fee. The fee structure is $5.00 for 60 days, $7.00 for 120 days, and $10.00 for one year. After registering, you are placed in Axion’s database.

Keep in mind, this fee does not guarantee work. In fact, Axion has incredibly low turnover. It’s unlikely you will every be contacted.

In other words, apply at your own discretion. Personally, I would skip this one. The fees are low, but it’s still a waste of time and money. Also, Axion says the require a fee to discourage thousands of unqualified people from applying. Even so, paying to apply for remote work is unnecessary. There are tons of companies that won’t charge you a single penny.

My suggestion? Skip it. Save your time and money. Instead, focus your attention on no-fee companies with online data entry jobs.

2. Xerox

Xerox has a virtual workforce program that includes a number of different career opportunities. A popular options include data entry, verification, and image tagging.

Keep in mind, Xerox isn’t always hiring. However, its jobs are updated often. Get in the habit of of checking the Xerox career page. Chances are, you will eventually find a data entry position posted.

As a bonus, there are plenty of virtual jobs outside of data entry. In fact, Xerox employs more than 8,000 home-based employees. I encourage you to check them out all the options here. You might find other virtual jobs outside of data entry that appeal to you.

As an added bonus, the majority of Xerox’s virtual positions are full-time employee ones, not freelance or independent contractor. This means you would be benefits eligible.

3. Telus International

This platform was officially launched in July 2021. Before then, it was Lionbridge (and before that it was Virtual Bee!).

There are several online data entry jobs here. First, you must create a profile and fill out contact information.

Next, take qualification tests. After that, you can accept paid assignments. Keep in mind, pay rates vary quite a bit.

Additionally, there are other online remote jobs to consider. Options include data annotation, online rating, data enrichment, and maps analysis. To get started, visit the AI Community Page.

4. OneSpace

OpenSpace (formerly CrowdSource) has on-demand online data entry jobs. In fact, there are two main sources of data entry work. These include Categorization and Classification.

To get started, submit a freelance application. After that, connect your PayPal account and pass qualification tests. You’re ready to access work on demand!

5. MicroWorkers

Next up, let’s look at MicroWorkers. There are data entry jobs here. However, you must sort through a lot of non-data entry jobs to find them.

Jobs here are broken down into small tasks. For example, simple tasks can take just a minute. Keep in mind, pay rates reflect the amount of time spent on each task.

As a result, most tasks pay between ten cents to four dollars. To get started, sign up for an account. Next, take MicroWorkers tests. Congrats! You’re ready to accept paid online data entry jobs.

6. Remotasks

Next, we have Remotasks. This is a newer site for online data entry jobs. Even so, it has a steady stream of new projects to complete. There are even long-term projects to consider!

When you’re ready, create a Remotasks account using Google or Facebook. Next, check your inbox. You will receive a welcome message with a quick-start guide. Keep in mind, some accounts can take up to 48 hours to complete. So, don’t worry if the welcome email doesn’t land in your inbox right away.

After that, you will complete an onboarding checklist in your account. From there, it’s time to start working on paid projects.

7. Appen

Personally, Appen is my go-to for online data entry jobs. For starters, there is a wide variety of data tasks to complete. Popular options include labeling images, moderating content, and categorizing social media.

Additionally, Appen frequently lands on the FlexJobs top companies with remote jobs list.

As a bonus, there are many other online jobs available too. For example, you can apply for long-term projects or part-time work.

To start quickly, simply sign up for an account. Then, select a project you want to work on. Finally, keep going! Now, you’re ready to work as much or little as you want whenever you want.

Remember, accuracy is important. Appen tracks all tasks. Consistent accuracy opens up even more, higher-paying projects.

Finally, I want to touch on data entry scams. Unfortunately, there are plenty of scammers in the work from home world of data entry. In fact, scammers will pose as representatives of the companies listed above. They will reach out to you through social media or via email.

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to identify scammers. For starters, do not apply to data entry jobs on Facebook. Instead, go directly to the hiring pages of the companies listed above.

Additionally, do not respond to out-of-the-blue emails from recruiters. Companies only reach out via email to candidates after they’ve applied – not before!

Lastly, go with your gut. If you discover a job that sounds too good to be true, it likely is.

Tech roles, in general, lend themselves well to remote work. And many tech-focused companies are extremely remote-friendly. In fact, more and more of them are favoring a distributed workforce — one where all employees can work where they please.

That means with a computer and internet connection, you can collaborate, manage projects, design, create, meet and share with coworkers. But instead of being stuck in a cubicle, you can work from your home office while the rest of the staff is spread out across the country — and sometimes around the globe! 

Sounds great, right? It is! But many remote job seekers tend to shy away from traditional tech companies assuming all openings are going to be for developers. The good news is, that isn’t the case! Here are 5 in-demand work from home tech jobs you can do without having any coding knowledge.

While you won’t need coding know how to work from home as a content creator, you will need previous writing experience.

If you do have content writing employment history, make sure to highlight any technical or sales copy you’ve written. It’s always a good idea to quantify how your content converts customers, educates buyers, and drives engagement and sales (that’s what good content should do!). 

If, however, you want to break into work from home tech jobs as a writer but have no professional experience, you need to get a portfolio together. 

You can submit guest blog posts to popular tech sites or offer freelance writing services for tech-focused professionals and entrepreneurs on sites like Upwork.

Once you have enough writing samples and a portfolio of related work, you stand a much better chance of being hired as a content creator in tech. A great way to establish yourself as a pro (even when you’re not) is to create a personal brand website.

5. Recruiter

We know how in-demand tech workers are in the industry as a whole. Big-name companies as well as startups are always on the lookout for the best and brightest talent to add to their ranks. Often, tech companies embrace remote work because they want to build the perfect team without geographic boundaries. 

As such, there’s a big market of work from home tech jobs for recruiters. 

Recruiting lends itself quite well to remote work. After all, most job searches are conducted entirely online from application to networking and even interviewing via Skype or phone. 

Virtual recruiters wear a lot of hats. Commonly, as an internal recruiter for a tech company you will:

• Use employee referrals to find outside candidates 
• Browse LinkedIn and social sites to find talent

3. Medical Coder 

The healthcare industry is huge! In fact, health care is the largest employer in the U.S., and shows no signs of slowing. 

And, while you might not typically associate doctors, nurses, and medical pros with remote work, there are actually some common work from home jobs in this industry. 

One of them is medical coding and billing. 

What is A Medical Coder? 

When you go to the doctor or hospital, the facility bills your insurance for the services you received. Each of the procedures, tests, and items used to treat you are assigned a code. 

These codes are submitted to third-party agencies, like Medicare and insurance providers, for payment. 

As a remote medical coder, you’ll be the one who combs through patient records and accurately codes them. 

Become A Medical Coder 

A recent survey found there were more medical coding jobs available than professionals to fill them. That’s good news for you, if you want to work from home in the medical industry. 4. Developer 

Did you know there are more than 1 billion websites in existence? Add that to the nearly 4,000,000 apps available for download, and that’s a whole lot of work to keep developers busy. 

Keep in mind, the term ‘developer’ is very broad. One developer might know javascript while the next knows Python, and many more in between.

Whatever their specialty, developers are the masterminds behind various websites, apps, and games that you regularly use on your phone, tablet, and PC. 

This industry, as a whole, is expected to grow more than 24%, which is much higher than the national average of all other jobs. Needless to say, it’s a common work from home job with lots of options for remote work. 

How Do I Become A Developer? 

Great question! There is no set path a developer should take to secure employment. Instead, you should figure out which type of developer position interests you. Maybe you’ll be more inclined to favor UX design or love the idea of ruby on rails. Only you can figure out what developer position will work best for you. 

A Free Resource for Aspiring Developers 

The good news is, there are plenty of free resources out there to help steer you in the right direction. One of my favorites is Codecademy. You can hop on Codecademy right now and dive into the world of coding. In a day’s time, you can learn some fundamentals that’ll put you well on your way to becoming a work from home developer in no time. 

5. Sales Representative 

Businesses simply wouldn’t be in business without sales departments.  After all, sales brings in money and money keeps the lights on (even virtually). 

And, as far as common work from home jobs, there are plenty of sales options to choose from. 

You might work for a software company selling directly to businesses. Maybe you’ll work for a large telecommunications (think internet service provider) company selling monthly subscriptions to consumers. 

Keep in mind, it takes a certain set of traits to be successful in sales — and it’s certainly not for everyone. But, there are tons of opportunities to work remotely as a sales rep if you’ve got the desire to succeed.

Non-phone jobs are about as in-demand as they come.

Many people prefer this low-key approach to working from home that doesn’t require answering an endless stream of inbound calls or having to follow-up with customers and clients via telephone.

Plus, if you have kids in your care, an excited pet or noisy neighbors, it’s next to impossible to find a phone job that allows background noise (although a few DO exist).

Thankfully, there’s more and more opportunities to work from home without ever having to pick up a phone. From writing to transcription and even the occasional data entry opportunity, here’s 30+ popular non-phone work from home jobs and extra money opportunities.

 Search Engine Evaluation

When you search for something using Google, you get a long list of web pages that are supposed to match your inquiry.

Sometimes, search engines do a great job at this. And other times, not so much.

That’s where search engine evaluators come in. They help improve search results by rating their relevancy compared to the original search query.

1. Lionbridge

Lionbridge usually updates their work from home job openings on a monthly basis — so be sure to check in with them as frequently to see what’s new. On top of search engine evaluator positions, Lionbridge often has other non-phone jobs available like Android Mobile Search Reviewer and Map Quality Analyst.

2. Appen

Appen is another great source of non-phone jobs (and not just search engine evaluation). But probably their most popular and readily available home-based jobs include search engine evaluators and social media evaluators.

3. iSoftStone

Earn $12.00/hour and work the hours you want when you work from home as a search engine evaluator for iSoftStone. There’s additional non-phone jobs here too like Ad Evaluator, Web Evaluator and crowdsourcing work.

4. Leapforce

Join the Leapforce At-Home Program to find a number of non-phone jobs like search engine evaluation, personalized search engine evaluator, and ads evaluator. There’s a short qualification process to go through before being given a contract.

Data Entry

Although one of the most requested non-phone jobs is data entry, there just isn’t a whole lot of jobs out there. However, there are a couple of companies that are known to hire home-based data entry workers from time to time.

5. The Smart Crowd

Formerly Virtual Bee, the Smart Crowd is now part of Lionbridge. But don’t worry, if you were a Virtual Bee worker, you can still use your same login credentials to access The Smart Crowd. The pay rate is pretty low for data entry work. I’ve been a member for some time and still haven’t managed to reach the payout threshold ($30.00).

 6. Dion Data

Dion Data accepts home-based data entry workers who meet their requirements. You must submit all your information, including a filled out application, via email if you’re interested in becoming a Home Contracted Vendor with them. They are NOT always hiring.

7. Sig Track

This non-phone job involves processing voter registration and petition signatures. It’s helpful if you have two monitors since it will increase your speed and earning potential. They’re not always enrolling new users. But when they are, there’s usually a good amount of work available!

Transcription

One of the most readily available non-phone jobs is transcription. Home-based transcription work is also beginner-friendly since many companies are willing to hire typists with little to no experience. So, don’t let lack of experience hold you back from trying your hand at typing!

8. Accutran Global 

Must pass a short test to qualify as a typist here. Pay is per word ($0.005). Payments are made once a month on the 15th.

9. AppenScribe

Part of the Appen Butler family, AppenScribe often has a number of different transcription projects available. There are two small transcription tests you’ll need to pass. Work is available day and night and is claimed on a first come first served basis.

 10. Take Note

If you can type 65+ words per minute, have a good set of headphones and high speed internet, you can get your foot in the door at Take Note! They’re (almost) always looking for freelance transcriptionists to join their team.

11. Go Transcript

Go Transcript is available to international candidates. You will have to pass a small test to get started. Payments are made once a week via Paypal. Their average worker earns about $150 per month and their top typists take home more than $1,200. How much you earn is entirely up to you — work as much or little as you’d like.

More Transcription Opportunities

There’s a lot of transcription companies that regularly contract with new typists. Transcription Training

When you’re ready to make some serious money typing online, it’s a good idea to receive formal training. Over at Transcribe Anywhere, you can take a comprehensive course that will teach you everything you need to become a successful general transcriptionists. There’s even a free mini course you can take to help you determine if a career as a transcriptionist is right for you.

Micro Jobs and Short Task Sites

If you’re just looking for a way to earn an extra buck here and there with the least time commitment, then micro jobs and short task sites are perfect for you. The per-task pay rate isn’t always great but, remember, a task can take you just a matter of minutes complete.

12. Amazon Mechanical Turk 

This is by far the largest micro jobs site around. There are usually thousands of Human Intelligence Tasks (HITs) posted at any given time. You can find everything from image tagging to small transcription jobs. Some companies exclusively post their work on Amazon mTurk — you just never know what you’ll find.

13. ClickWorker

There are often a lot of data collection and research tasks available at ClickWorker. To work on projects, you need to take and pass base assessments. These are just to make sure you’ve got the skills needed to perform the work successfully. Payments are made every week as long as you’ve met the minimum payment amount ($5.00 for PayPal and $10.00 for bank transfers).

14. OneSpace

Formerly CrowdSource, OneSpace lets you create a Workstation so you can claim and complete tasks. Part of your Workstation will include taking tests that, when you pass, unlock new assignments. Sometimes you can find higher-paying writing jobs here, which are quick and easy to complete.

Writing

Writing is one of the most readily available non-phone jobs out there. And don’t worry, you don’t need any experience to get started. Writing really is a versatile way to make money from home — you can write to supplement your income or make it your full-time job.

15. Textbroker

Textbroker pays you once a week via Paypal as long as you’ve completed ten dollars’ worth of assignments. Although a content mill, Textbroker gives writers a chance to work on higher-paying assignments, direct orders, and even move up to become an editor/proofreader. 16. Buy Keyword Articles (BKA)

As its name implies, BKA provides its clients with keyword-rich articles. So, if you sign up as a writer for them, you will be writing content based around a set of keywords.

17. Great Content

At Great Content, you can earn as much as $37.50 for each article you write. To get started, you just need to submit a short 200-300 word sample to prove your writing chops.

Freelance Writing

You don’t need to contract with a content mill to get started as a writer. Many newbies start off freelancing on their own and build quite successful careers. If you prefer to freelance versus contracting with a company, be sure to check out Write Your Way to Your First 1k.

Scorer/Grader/Evaluator

There are a number of non-phone jobs as a professional scorer. These jobs vary a bit depending on the company you contract with but, for the most part, you score or evaluate an exam or essay while following set guidelines. Most of these opportunities are seasonal and are more readily available during the school year.

18. ETS

You can become a professional scorer for ETS and evaluate student content both online and in person. The volume of work available changes throughout the year.

19. Measurement Inc.

This is one of the largest exam evaluation companies. Measurement Inc. has opportunities available to score exams in many different subjects. All Readers are hired on a temporary basis and are expected to work five days a week during their contract period.

20. Pearson

Pearson has non-phone jobs available throughout the year for assessors and scorers. The type of assignment can range from evaluating essays to scoring math exams.

Chat Agent Jobs

A growing number of companies offer live chat on their websites. And this is good news for those seeking non-phone jobs because it means more chat agents jobs! Usually, the company doesn’t hire chat agents directly. Instead, they contract with companies who provide live chat.

21. Site5

As a hosting company, Site5 has customers around the world who need help with everything from billing questions to navigating cPanel. They sometimes have openings for full-time chat agents to assist their users.

22. Needle

Become a Brand Advocate at Needle and earn extra money for recommending your favorite products. You get paid in cash and earn points which can be redeemed for products.

23. Talk2Rep

At Talk2Rep, you can become a sales chat agent for popular brands, like AT&T. This is an hourly plus commission opportunity for any sales you make.

Community Moderator

Since so many customers interact with businesses and brands on social media and on community forums, community moderator non-phone jobs have been quite popular. This job can include everything from reviewing comments before they go live or responding to social media questions/comments/concerns on behalf of a business.

24. LiveWorld

LiveWorld provides 24/7 content moderation. Moderators review content, respond accordingly, and help protect brand image on social media.

25. Modsquad

As a Mod, your job can include everything from chatting live with customers to moderation comments on forums. Mods are well-versed in managing communities and can handle social media comments all while generating buzz. You can work from anywhere as long as you have a secure internet connection.

26. Crisp Thinking

Crisp Thinking is built on the idea that brands need around-the-clock protection. This includes social media moderation, forum moderation, and social risk monitoring. They hire moderators on a freelance basis to work on projects as they become available.

Proofreading

If you’re the person others lovingly refer to as the “grammar police” and spot errors when reading just about everything (yes, even the back of cereal boxes), then you’d probably make an excellent proofreader! You don’t always need experience or an English degree to get started, especially if you strike out on your own and become a freelance proofreader.

27. ProofreadingPal

ProofreadingPal hires eight months out of the year but always welcomes applications. Their contractors can earn anywhere from $300 to $3,000 a month depending on how many projects they work on.

28. Domainite

You’ll have to edit a sample document to get started at Domainite. The pay is on the lower side of what a professional proofreader would expect to make. However, it is a good spot to start if you’re looking to gain experience as a proofreader.

29. Gramlee

Gramlee is always looking for talented editors and proofreaders. Since clients can upload projects at any time, you never know what kind of work may be available.

Proofreading Training

There’s just some non-phone jobs that are unique enough that they don’t really fall into a particular category. Nonetheless, they’re still valid ways to make money from home without having to pick up a phone.

30. Operator

Operator is an iPhone app that connects shoppers with product experts. As an expert, you text personalized recommendations to customers based on their shopping needs — whether they’re looking for the latest technology or the perfect gift for their mother-in-law, an Operator Expert helps guide them to the right choice.

31. Fancy Hands

Fancy Hands is a virtual assistant company that hires assistants to perform a number of tasks. Yes, there are phone jobs — quite a few of them, in fact. But there are also a number of non-phone jobs like calendar management, travel arrangements, and online research. If you prefer to avoid the phone, it’s definitely possible at Fancy Hands.

Other Non-Phone Jobs to Consider

Don’t forget about the possibility of freelancing! By using a popular marketplace, like Upwork, you can gain access to thousands and thousands of gigs — most of which won’t ever require telephone interaction.

You can also sign up as a seller on Fiverr and side-hustle your way to financial independence or complete career freedom (check out these stories of Fiverr success for inspiration!).

General Proofreader 

Great at spotting errors? Frequently find typos in everything you read? You’d probably make a great proofreader!

Bookkeeper

Number lovers will no doubt enjoy the world of virtual bookkeeping where you can immerse yourself in record keeping for different businesses! 

And, before you even ask, you don’t need professional experience or special credentials to be a successful bookkeeper.

A legal typist might listen to a recorded deposition or interview and transcribe verbatim what is being said. Verbatim typing requires a little more skill because you have to pick up every single um, uh, and er — no matter what.

Survey Taker

Some survey sites pay by points and others cold-hard cash. My favorite? Vindale Research. They send you a check or PayPal payment anytime you cash out with $50+. 

And, they’ll even send you an email to let you know whenever a survey is available that fits your demographics. Simple, right?

Phone Mystery Shopper 

Moms are often looking for ways to make money from home. But kids making background noise can make it difficult to find work. Not with phone mystery shopping! 

As a phone mystery shopper, you call up businesses and ask a series of questions. You’re judging the phone call on a number of different criteria. The best part? You can have background noise! Check out these companies that hire phone mystery shoppers to get started.

Freelancing

Great at something? Chances are, you can freelance it! 

As a freelancer, you offer services for sale. A service can be anything from editing a document to designing a logo. Really, it’s up to you to decide what service you want to sell. 

Once you’re ready to get going, you can use one of the many freelance marketplace sites to market your services or create a freelance service site that sells for you.  

Pinterest Assistant

Pinterest is huge! And because of this, so many businesses and brands turn to Pinterest for promotion. 

But, Pinterest also takes up a lot of time. That’s why these same businesses are willing to outsource the work to a Pinterest Assistant, like you. Becoming a Pinterest Assistant is one of the ways to make money from home in marketing and social media. And, if you love to pin, this could be a perfect gig for you. 

Facebook Ad Pro 

There’s no denying the power of Facebook. People use it every day to interact with brands and catch up with friends and family. Because it’s so powerful, Facebooks Ads are often used by businesses to get their name in front of new customers.

I know I used this a lot as a first time parent. Once, when my son was just three months old, he developed a fever. As a brand new mom, I panicked. A quick call to the nurse hotline at 1:00 a.m. soon alleviated my fears and I was able to easily manage the fever at home thanks to the helpful advice from the nurse on the other line. 

This quick help and advances in technology have made telemedicine, and especially telenurses, in demand as far as jobs you can do from home.

Whenever I think of legal jobs, my mind always goes straight to lawyers. And this, of course, isn’t a very remote-friendly job since lawyers often have to make real-world appearances in court rooms or meet clients IRL. 

But, behind the scenes, there are actually a lot of virtual and remote-friendly legal jobs you can do from home. 

Virtual Paralegal 

Paralegals are the right-hand men and women of lawyers. Paralegals are tasked with a wide range of tasks. This can include things like writing case briefs to researching legal precedent. 

And since a lot of these tasks can be done remotely, thanks to online databases and software, paralegals are often able to work remotely. 

But keep in mind, paralegals need to be trained — even though they don’t give legal advice. So, if you don’t have previous legal experience, you need to receive the proper training first.

Legal Typist 

Fun fact: I worked as a legal typist for several years. And, honestly, it was one of my favorite jobs you can do from home. Why? Well, the pay was great. The subject matter often interesting. And it was flexible enough that I could work anytime, anywhere. 

You can find work as a legal typist with a law office, working for a lawyer, or one of the many companies that routinely hires legal transcriptionists.

Love legal dramas? You may just enjoy the work of a home-based court researcher! On any given day, you can find yourself at your local courthouse tracking down cases and local statutes.

You may answer questions about courses, discuss financial aid options, and generally help would-be students make the right decisions about starting their learning journey.

Web Designer

Web design is a popular way to earn a living from home. But, keep in mind, web design is a broad term. As a web designer, you may deal with user experience, general aesthetic of a web page, SEO, and graphic design.

A virtual assistant (VA) can assist professionals, bloggers, executives, or anyone busy enough to need an extra helping hand during the week. The best part? You can work just about anywhere as a VA as long as you have access to internet. 

Previous receptionist, clerical, or admin experience will definitely help you launch a VA career from scratch!

Data Entry Worker 

I often get asked about legit data entry jobs you can do from home. And, truth be told, there just aren’t that many of them out there.

These remote-friendly jobs are great for anyone who loves to write, spots errors from a mile away, or simply enjoys reading (and correcting) everything from romance novels to academic essays. 

The best part? You don’t necessarily need experience to be successful. 

Freelance Writer 

If you hang out here on Work From Home Happiness enough, you’ll quickly learn that I became a full-fledged remote worker when I became a freelance writer. But my path to freelance writing success was anything but glamorous.

Editor

You see, the beauty of remote work is that there are endless possibilities. From master degree holding virtual librarians to entry-level chat agents (and everything in between), there is a work from home job out there for everyone. Period.

That’s why I’m surprised to learn that so many job seekers believe that they can’t work from home because they don’t have “the right skills.”

Truth be told, there is no specific skill set that will guarantee you find a remote job. But there is one skill, in particular, that can definitely stack the work-from-home cards in your favor: Customer service!

Put Your Customer Service Skills To Work From Home

Did you just moan and groan at the thought of working from home in the customer service arena? Don’t! Hear me out.

I know customer service work isn’t exactly the most popular in the eyes of job seekers, but virtual companies and online employers have a HUGE need for individuals with customer service skills to fill a variety of remote roles.

And this doesn’t mean you need to have previous experience in a call center. Working retail, in a restaurant, in the hospitality industry or any customer-facing role, can prepare you for the many types of at-home jobs that need workers with people skills, like you.

It’s Not All Call Centers

Yes, there are a lot of virtual call centers out there that are heavy on the phone work. And while these jobs aren’t for everyone, they are a great option for anyone who wants to work from home ASAP. But virtual call centers aren’t the only option for customer service pros.

In fact, you can use your existing customer service skills, to land a work-from-home job that isn’t so phone heavy.

Will you be on the phone sometimes? Yes! But you won’t be tethered to it the entire workday.

Chat Agent

You’ve probably visited a website that had a little window pop up in the bottom right-hand corner that said something like “Chat With Us Now.”

And, chances are, the person on the other side of that chat window is sitting at their home office ready to assist you with questions or concerns you may have.

Chat agents have the luxury of working from home in customer service without having to constantly answer incoming calls. Instead, they answer incoming chats. And chats are nothing more than back and forth exchanges via text — no phones!

Now, this doesn’t mean you’ll never have to interact with customers on the phone. On occasion, you might have to make an outbound phone call to assist someone. But, for the most part, you can expect that remote chat agent jobs mainly use instant messaging to showcase their customer service skills.

Email Support

I don’t know about you, but if I have a non-pressing matter as a consumer, I will gladly email a company for help versus picking up the phone. And, clearly, I’m not alone as more and more companies offer email support as an option instead of an 800-number you have to call.

And this is good news for anyone who wants to work from home in customer service without making a ton of phone calls. That’s because with more companies offering email support, the more jobs for email support pros, like you!

Remember, while these companies have an email support option, that doesn’t mean it’s their only option.

So, you may very well be in charge of answering emails AND answering phone calls. But, it does mean that you won’t constantly be answering the phone. Instead, expect about a 50/50 split on the amount of phone calls answered versus emails sent as a work from home email support rep.

Social Media Moderator

An estimated 67% of consumers now use social media — like Facebook or Twitter — to reach a resolution with a company. You may have done it too. I know I have. I’ve tweeted at Amazon over a shipping issue and  had excellent results.

I’ve also used social media to compliment Thrive Market after a particularly wonderful shopping experience with them!

A lot of times, the response you get — whether you’re tweeting them or leaving a comment on Facebook or Yelp — is from someone whose job it is to respond to user-generated comments on social media.

And that’s exactly what a social media moderator does all day — they scour a company’s social media profiles to respond to customer-generated posts, reviews, and comments. You may even proactively reach out to consumers to help build stronger relationships.

Whether working to improve a customer service moment or simply answering a question about a product, you can expect little to no phone work as a social media moderator.

Virtual Assistant 

Take it from someone who has worked as a virtual assistant — you need A LOT of customer service know-how to be successful as a VA.

As a VA, you’ll wear a lot of different hats, many of which require customer service skills to get results. You see a VA helps others tackle to-do lists and get more done in their day. This can include everything from calendar management to making travel arrangements.

The good news is, many of the tasks a VA does can be done online without having to pick up a phone. On occasion, you may need to make a call, but a lot of work can be done via email or messaging.

For example, when I contracted with Fancy Hands as a VA, you got to pick from available tasks in a general queue. That means you could totally skip over those that require any phone work and instead focus on those that were email related.
