This is not an easy question to answer. That’s because the definition of part-time changes from one company to another.

Let’s say you’re a full time student. Your classes start first thing in the morning and end around 4:00 in the afternoon. Step 1: Which job title are you interested in?

Step 2: Create a target company list. 

Next, jot down a list of companies you could see yourself working for. Ideally, these companies will regularly hire workers in your preferred job title list. Step 3: Build your network. Strategically.

How to become a remote online notary? Great question. Here at Work From Home Happiness we’re all about remote-friendly career paths. In fact, we’ve written a number of in-depth career guides for aspiring remote workers. After all, we want you to find a remote job you’ll love, not just any ol’ remote job. 

And, in recent years, notary work has become increasingly popular among remote workers over the last few years.

Formerly, notary work was not remote friendly. However, thanks to the pandemic Remote Online Notary (RON) became a thing.

Currently, more than 40 states have laws that allow remote notaries.  And being a notary is just one of many wfh jobs out there. But, it’s not something you can just jump into. Instead, you have to follow a number of steps in order to become a remote online notary. 

So, without further ado let’s get into it. 

What Is A Notary? 

Before learning how to become a notary, it’s important to discuss what a notary is.

First, a notary is technically known as a Notary Public. These are state-appointed persons who act as witnesses during the signing of important documents. But, they do much more than that! 

According to the National Notary Association, 

“A Notary Public is an official of integrity appointed by state government to serve the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of official fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents.”

As previously mentioned, notaries play an important role during the signing of documents. So, people turn to notaries when signing official documents. 

Now, technically anything you sign can be notarized (including your second grader’s field trip permission slip) BUT not everything needs to be signed. However, commonly notarized documents fall in categories like:

• Real Estate
• Legal
• Financial
• Healthcare

What Can A Notary Do?

Again, a notary can notarize just about any signed document. I’ve had a notary present during the signing of my parents’ wills and at the closing of my home’s refinance. Heck, some states will even let notaries marry couples! 

But, there are also things notaries cannot do. For example, they cannot certify copies of vital records like birth and death certificates. 

What Work Does A Notary Perform? 

Next, let’s look at the specific job functions of a notary. First and foremost, notaries verify identity. They make sure the people signing documents are who they say they are. In other words, notaries check government issued IDs to prevent fraud.

Secondly, notaries double check that documents are complete and ready to be signed. Then they ensure all parties are willingly signing and are not being forced into anything. Similarly, they’ll make sure that each person understands what it is being signed and are competent enough to knowingly sign. 

After all named parties have signed, the notary will fill out their notary certificate. This will include the notary’s signature along with their stamp or seal. It looks something like this: 

Finally, the completed certificate with stamp or seal is provided with the signed documents. That’s it – the notarization is complete! 

How Much Does a Notary Public Make? 

When discussing how to become a remote online notary the topic of pay inevitably comes up.  Notaries cannot just charge any amount for their services. Instead, most states set limits on what a notary can bill based on the document they are notarizing and the number of people signing.

For example, Florida allows notaries to charge the following fees per signature: 

• $10 – acknowledgments
• $10 – Jurats
• $10 – Verbal Oath/Affirmation 
• $25 – RON (Remote Online Notary)

Additionally, Florida Notaries can charge extra for travel. “How much extra?,” you ask. Well, that’s up to the individual notary. The State of Florida does not set limits for notary travel expenses. 

To sum it up, notary earnings vary state to state. However, notaries are able to charge per signature or oath and may also charge reasonable travel fees. Remember, some states even allow notaries to officiate weddings. For example, Florida Notaries can charge $30 to perform a marriage. 

Who Can Be a Notary Public? 

Now, can anyone become a notary? Again, the answer to this question largely depends on which state you live in. However, the majority of states have general notary guidelines like:

• 18 years or older
• Legal resident of the state 
• Read and write English 
• No felonies
• No misdemeanors involving fraud or deceit

Additionally, some states have mandatory training and/or exam requirements. For example, the State of Florida requires 3 hours of notary training followed by a passing score on a test. 

So, Does That Mean I Can’t Become a Notary With a Criminal Record? 

Not necessarily. Some states will not allow individuals with felonies on their record to become a Notary Public. Period.

Other states, like Florida, allow notaries with felony convictions as long as that person has had their civil rights restored. Additionally, misdemeanors that involve fraud, dishonesty, or deceit can prevent you from becoming a Notary Public in many states.

Remember, every state has unique rules regarding its notaries. Always double check your state’s notary guidelines for the most up-to-date information. 

Can I Work From Home As a Notary Public? 

Absolutely! In fact, how to become a remote online notary is a pretty popular question these days. And, thanks to the pandemic, the majority of states now have laws that allow its notaries to work online. 

So, what’s the difference between how to become a notary and how to become an online notary? 

First, an online notary is typically referred to as an RON which stands for Remote Online Notary. 

A Remote Online Notary can notarize the same documents as a traditional Public Notary. Similarly, RONs perform the same tasks previously mentioned but entirely online. To do their jobs, remote notaries use special technology to complete the notarization process. This allows all parties to appear before one another and verify identity without physically being in the same room. 

How Do I Become A Remote Online Notary? 

Many states require you to become a traditional Public Notary first. Then you can apply to become a RON. Some states have additional training requirements for RONs (like Florida). Remember, default to your Secretary of State website for the most current direction for RONs and Notary Public information.

What Schooling Do I Need to Be A Remote Online Notary? 

Finally, some states require training for notaries. Other states simply ask you to pass an exam. However, almost all states have free training or study guides aspiring notaries can use to satisfy notary requirements. 

Please be cautious of “online notary schools” that teach you to become a notary in your state. Most states do not have mandatory training requirements. And those which do often provide all the training you need for free. 

Florida, for example, provides its own Notary Education Program. The three hour course is the only training you’ll need and it’s 100% free!  From there, Florida offers an additional Remote Online Notary training – also free of charge.

What if My State Doesn’t Have Training Requirements?

Furthermore, some states have zero guidance for how to become a notary. For example, notaries in Alabama are appointed by county-level probate judges.

To be considered, Alabama residents fill out an application and secure a $25,000 bond. From there, it’s up to each notary to develop the skills necessary to be successful. The State of Alabama website simply points residents to its Secretary of State website. 

It can be pretty confusing on how to become a remote online notary depending on which state you live in! Before you jump in, please visit your Secretary of State Website. A google search can result in hundreds of online training programs or notary schools that charge you for training you can receive for free from your state! 

What Fees Are There To Become A Remote Online Notary?

Great question! Again, every state has different filing fees for its notary publics and RONs. For example, the State of Florida charges a $39 application fee for its notaries.

Additional expenses remote online notaries have include:

• Notary Stamp or Seal
• eSeal
• Digital Certificate
• State Approved RON software to perform remote notary services 
• Surety bond for online notarizations

Additionally, notaries may opt for errors and omissions insurance or a Notary Journal to keep track of all their official acts. Errors and omissions insurance protects you in the event you make a mistake while providing remote online notary services.

Again, and I hate to keep saying this, but your state will let you know what supplies are required and which are optional!

How To Become a Remote Online Notary 

Lastly, let’s put it all together so you have a good idea of what it takes to become a notary in your state. Generally, these are the steps needed to learn how to become a remote online notary:

Meet Your State’s Requirements

See if you meet your state’s notary requirements, i.e., age and criminal history. Note: Some states disqualify individuals with felony convictions or anyone with fraud convictions

Complete Training (if Necessary) & Pass Certification

Determine if your state mandates notary training. Remember, you might not have to pay for training if your state (like Florida) provides it free of charge. Additionally, you will likely have to become a Public Notary first before you can become a RON.

Research if your state allows Remote Online Notary (RON)

Not all states allow RON. Use our handy State Notary Resources sheet to see if yours does. If so, complete necessary training to also become an RON

Complete Notary Application

After you complete training and/or certification fill out the application to become a notary in your state and pay the associated fees. Additionally, purchase a surety bond. Optionally, buy Errors & Omissions insurance. Please check your state’s Secretary of State Website for surety bond requirements and approved vendors!

Gather Necessary Notary Supplies

Compile a list of necessary supplies as a notary and RON

Notary Public and RONs need specific supplies like stamps, embossers, certificates, and software. Only purchase what you need – your state will tell you which supplies are needed. Additionally, RONs may only use state-approved vendors for remote notarization software. Examples include Nexsys, NotaryCam, SafeDocs, etc.

Market your in-person and Remote Online Notary services 

Once your application is approved and you have all the necessary equipment -Congrats! You’re now a Notary Public and/or Remote Online Notary. Now it’s time to market your services.

How To Become A Remote Online Notary and Start A Home Business 

Finally, it’s time to start working as a remote online notary. Remember, you are now self-employed. As such, you need to learn how to be self-employed from home.

Let’s cover the basics of overnight work before we get into the nitty gritty.

What is Considered an Overnight Remote Job?

First, let’s discuss what overnight remote jobs actually are. In the US, work schedules are split into three different shifts:

• First Shift – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Second Shift – 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
• Third Shift – 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

So, a business open 24 hours a day has three sets of workers to cover all three shifts. In this case, we’re talking about the third shift which runs from 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. As a result, it’s commonly referred to as “overnight” or the “graveyard” shift.

Like all remote jobs, overnight ones are broken down into two main types:

2. Self-Employment

As a reminder, an employee position is like a traditional job. In other words, you work for a company. As a result, you are given specific rights like:

FlexJobs

First is FlexJobs. This is a membership site but it’s well worth the monthly fee. To start, FlexJobs hand screens every single listing (and there are a lot of them). It’s guaranteed that all posted positions are 100% legit. In other words, you don’t have to worry about scams. Plus, there are both employee and self-employment job leads here. So, no matter your remote work type, there are plenty of leads!

SolidGigs

Next up is SolidGigs. This is a job leads website specifically built for freelancers. As I said before, it takes a lot of work to get started and stay afloat as a freelancer. After all, you have to find clients and spend countless hours looking for leads. That’s where SolidGigs comes in. How Long Does It Take to Find a Remote Job?

On average it takes five to six months to find a job according to TopResume. This includes both remote and in-person jobs. However six to seven months is standard for remote jobs. Typically, remote hiring takes longer because everything is coordinated digitally.

Of course, these are just averages. Some job seekers have shorter job search windows. And others have much longer ones.

Either way, anticipate roughly six months to pass between application and offer.

Why Does It Take So Long?

It’s frustrating, I know. You’re eager to work and want remote jobs hiring immediately – not in five to seven months!

But a lot happens when a company posts a remote job.

Open Applications

First, companies gather applications and resumes. Most companies accept applications from two to four weeks. During this time not much else happens.

Application Review

Once the application period closes the hiring manager has hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of resumes to sort through. Fortunately, most companies use Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to narrow down the talent pool. ATS searches resumes for keywords. Those that have the keywords move to the ‘yes’ pile and those that don’t are discarded. Now the recruiter can manually review the ‘yes’ resumes and extend interview offers.

Screening Interviews

The majority of companies will conduct a round of phone interviews first. These are usually screening interviews. You may be asked about your background, experience, education, availability, and home office setup. If you pass the screening interview, a more formal interview will be scheduled.

Formal Interviews

Now hiring managers will conduct formal interviews. For remote workers, this can be another phone interview or a video interview like Zoom. Please note, just 2-3% of applicants make it to this stage!

Job Offer

On average a job offer happens 5-7 days from the interview. Usually more than one person makes a hiring decision. Needless to say, it takes time to compare notes and come to a final decision.

Job Search Delays

Hiring takes a lot of time and effort under perfect conditions. The process can go more slowly for many reasons, i.e.:

• Vacations
• Holidays
• Budget
• Schedule conflicts
• Being too busy
• Lack of resources

In the end, it amounts to a months-long process from application to offer.

Where Can I Find Remote Jobs Hiring Immediately?

Now you know how hiring happens and why it’s such a slooowww process. From here we can talk about ways to speed it up and even remote jobs hiring immediately.

But, I want to state from the start there are no instant remote jobs. Any listing that promises you’ll start today and make tons of cash is a lie or outright scam. However, there are options to start working remotely sooner rather than later. In some cases, you can start the very same day.

Micro Task Sites

Micro task sites are large crowdsourced platforms. First, clients post micro jobs. Then approved workers claim tasks. The term crowdsourced comes from “crowd” and “outsourced.” When the two are combined you get crowdsourced.

To start you fill out a questionnaire and short profile. Once approved you claim tasks. Simple, right? It is. The process is really quick. You start work the same day in most cases.

So, what’s the catch? Microtask sites don’t pay well. They’re meant to be cost-effective for clients. Some tasks might pay a penny upon completion. Others offer a few bucks.

Micro Task and Crowdsourced Sites for Remote Jobs Hiring Immediately

CrowdSpring – Accepts freelance designers for projects like Art & Illustration, Logo & Identity, Web & Mobile Design to name a few.

Amazon Mechanical Turk – A 24/7 network of workers (called Turkers). Tons of different tasks from transcription to answering surveys.

ClickWorker – ClickWorkers decide when, where and how much they want to work! Claim simple micro jobs instantly and take assessments for higher paying tasks.

OneSpace – Has task training for higher-paying tasks. Tons of writing and transcription jobs here.

Freelance Marketplaces

Freelancing is another option for remote jobs hiring immediately. Usually, it takes time to get established. However, it’s easier to get started with freelance marketplace sites.

These sites are free for workers. It’s clients who pay to post jobs. Freelancers pitch their services to clients after a job is posted. Finally clients select the best freelancer for the job. Typically, freelance marketplace sites handles payment and ensures everything goes smoothly for both the client and freelancer.

Freelance Marketplaces for Remote Jobs Hiring Immediately

Upwork – First up, is Upwork! Profiles are free but you have a limited number of pitches each month. However, more pitches are available to purchase.

Freelancer – In addition to Upwrk is Freelancer. It’s also free to create a profile but paid options are available too. Above all, a winning profile is key for visibility!

Fiverr – On the other hand is Fiverr. A gig is bought every four seconds here. However you create gigs to sell. Then clients purchase gigs. Finally, get creative! Any legal skill can be sold on Fiverr.

TopTal – Only accepts 3% of freelancers! As a result, you apply to work here. However, new freelancers are accepted as long as they’re skilled.

Guru – Next is Guru. Similarly to Upwork there’s a quoting system. In short, clients choose the best quote.

Online Contract Job Sites

Next, you can use contract sites for remote jobs hiring immediately. A contract job site hires workers for a limited time. Consequently, jobs last for a few months to a year. However contracts can always be extended or renewed.

The most popular online contract jobs involve writing, transcription, and content evaluation.

Appen – Appen is a data collection company. Prior to working you fill out an application and complete training. The contract jobs include micro tasks, data collection, and longer-term projects.

Textbroker – Textbroker is often called a content mill. As a result most jobs are low-paying writing tasks. On the positive side, Textbroker offers quick work for new writers.

REV – Rev is a captioning company. Occasionally there are transcription jobs too. All workers must pass tests before accepting paid jobs.

BKA Content – BKA Content is another writing site. However, applicants pass tests to get hired. Most assignments involve keywords and SEO.

Lionbridge – Lionbridge is similar to Appen. But Lionbridge focuses primarily on interpretation and translation services. So, bilingual applicants are always welcome to apply!

TranscribeMe – TranscribeMe is another online job site. For the most part there are transcription jobs available. However, there are editing openings from time to time.

Gramlee – Gramlee is always looking for talented editors. First editor must submit an application. After that Gramlee contacts qualified applicants.

CACTUS Global – CACTUS has both freelance and contract jobs. In general jobs are academic in nature. For example, Academic Editing and Academic Reviewer are two in-demand roles.

Where NOT to Find Remote Jobs Hiring Immediately

Lastly, let’s discuss online scams. From time to time I come across fake jobs pretending to represent a company on this list. For the most part the scam goes the same way:

A “representative” contacts you out of the blue. After that they offer you a job. However, you must pay a fee to get started. Once the fee is paid you never hear from the “company” again.

Of course not all remote jobs hiring immediately are scams. But you need to stay mindful of scammers out there. Sooner or later you will encounter one. To be sure you are not getting scammed remember:

• Companies will not ask for money to get hired
• People are not hired through instant message or chat
• Your private data is needed only after you’re hired, i.e., bank details, SSN, etc.
• Email communication comes from a company’s domain, i.e., ashlee@workfromhomehappiness.com NOT Gmail or yahoo

Given that scams are very real, stick to reputable remote job sites. On the other hand, avoid sites like Facebook and Craigslist where scammers are known to prey. Additionally, do not get caught up in direct sales or multi-level marketing (MLM). Direct sales reps paint a pretty picture of high earnings for little effort. However, the FTC reports 99% of MLM participants lose money. Further more, an FTC report states: “With the odds of profit being about one in 3,922 it is more appropriate to call MLM programs a ‘loss certainty’ than an ‘income opportunity.'”

In other words, don’t fall for MLM sales pitches. Undoubtedly the result is loss of time, energy, money, and effort!

How to Get Hired Faster

Now that you know sites with remote jobs hiring immediately and how to spot and avoid scams, let’s talk job search tips. Even though the average remote job search is roughly six months, not all are. In fact, you can easily speed up your remote job search.

From there, specify industries you’re interested in, i.e.:

Fortunately, you quickly brush off this setback only to find even more remote jobs that exclude your state. What gives?

Doesn’t “work from home” mean just that whether your home is in Iowa, Florida, or California? 

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. In fact, just 5% of remote jobs posted on FlexJobs have no location restrictions.

Clearly, these location requirements are there for a reason, and that reason isn’t just a dislike for your state and the people within it. Instead, the answer boils down to money and state laws.

State Registration Requirements

First, a company must register its business in each state to legally hire there. With 50 US states (plus D.C., Puerto Rico, and other territories) registering is time consuming, complicated, and expensive. 

Registration Rules

For example, Arizona asks companies to provide certified copies of its articles of incorporation and a certificate of good standing. Both documents must be dated within 60 days. Plus, there’s a filing fee as high as $365 (not to mention obtaining certified copies of business documents costs money too). It all adds up quickly.

In-State Address

Additionally, most states require a local physical address (not a P.O. box) for out-of-state companies. To comply, companies hire registered agents in each state to receive mail, subpoenas, tax notices, and other important documents from state agencies. 

That’s a lot of moving parts for a single company to handle. Some states make it a bigger hassle to hire locally. Often, remote-friendly companies opt out of registering to hire in those states. 

State Taxes

Next up, a company opens itself up to tax implications with each new state they hire in. For starters, employers need to register with the correct state agencies and follow state-specific tax rates. As you know, taxes are never fun to deal with. This holds true for companies, too!

Tax ID

A state-provided tax ID is needed in addition to a federal tax ID or employer identification number (EIN). Why? A state ID is used by companies to legally take money from paychecks to pay state taxes (called withholding).

The amount and type of withholdings varies by state.

Some states don’t withhold income taxes at all. Others require companies to tax employees based on the employee’s location and not the company’s home state. There are select states that require companies to pay both local AND home state taxes. 

For example, if a company headquartered in California hires you remotely in North Carolina they have to pay California and North Carolina state taxes.

Of course, companies prefer to hire in states with favorable tax rules. 

Hiring Laws, Rules, and Regulations

Even after a company files to hire and set up taxes, there are more rules to follow during the hiring process.

First, the content of applications has to comply with state-level laws.

Non-discrimination and Equal Employment Opportunity 

Each state has rules banning employment discrimination based on marital status, sexual identity, and gender identity/expression. Plus, some states offer additional protection for whistle-blowers. There are even state specific laws that regulate an employer’s rules about off-duty conduct (smoking, posting on social media, etc.). 

Criminal History 

 At some point, you’ve likely filled out an application that asked whether you’ve been convicted of a crime. Today, some states have regulations that prevent employers from asking about criminal history during the application process. However, this rule doesn’t apply once a conditional job offer is given. 

Background Checks, Drug Testing, and References 

Many companies require background and reference checks for potential employees. Of course, every state has unique rules covering when companies can ask for screening, which positions need to be drug tested, and who will pay for the background check and/or drug testing. There are also rules regarding running credit checks on applicants. 

Also, there is a long list of employment regulations each state has regarding topics like: 

• Child labor
• Immigration
• Interview questions
• Lie detectors
• Public records 

Some states have many rules to follow throughout the hiring process. Others take a more relaxed approach. Either way, companies will consider each state’s regulations and employment laws before they decide to hire there. Highly restrictive states often get passed over for those that are more employer-friendly. 

Payroll 

Last but certainly not least, states have payroll rules in place (try saying that five times real fast) that companies have to follow. Payroll, of course, is the important process of paying workers. Understandably, there are plenty of statewide payroll restrictions to protect workers’ paychecks.

Minimum Wage

Minimum wage in the US is a hot topic. Currently, the federal minimum wage is a measly $7.25/hour. This rate hasn’t increased since 2009!

In response, many states have their own minimum wage – some higher and some lower than the federal standard.

For example, Wyoming & Georgia have rates at just $5.15 an hour. However, many states have higher minimum wage rates (as of 01/01/2022) including: 

• Florida: $10.00
• California: $14.00
• Washington: $14.49
• Arizona: $12.80
• New Jersey: $13.00
• New York: $13.20 

Remember, companies have to follow the state rules where its employees live.

For example, a company located in Wyoming must pay remote employees living in Washington $14.49/hour – a whopping $9.34 lower than Wyoming’s minimum wage.  

Unfortunately, restricting hiring in states with higher minimum wages saves companies plenty on payroll. You might see fewer remote jobs if you live in a state with better than average minimum wage.

Paycheck Frequency 

Most companies choose to pay workers weekly, biweekly, or semimonthly. However, when hiring out-of-state, companies must meet that state’s guidelines. 

For example, Florida doesn’t have pay frequency rules. However, a Florida company that hires in New York must pay remote New Yorkers weekly to comply with state law.

And, running payroll isn’t exactly cheap. According to Cost Owl, companies pay about $5 per employee for each pay cycle. Of course, more pay cycles = more money.

Companies looking to save cash might forgo hiring in states requiring weekly pay. Check out your state’s payday requirements to see how it stacks up against others. 

Overtime

Overtime compensates employees at a higher pay rate when they work longer hours. Per Federal rules, overtime pay of time and half is given to employees who work more than 40 hours in a week.

For example, an employee who earns $20/hour will be paid $30/hour for any overtime worked. 

• Half of $20 = $10
• Time ($20) + Half ($10) = $30 

Some states are more generous with overtime than Federal Laws. Alaska, California, and Nevada require overtime pay whenever an employee works more than 8 hours in a day.

In these states, remote companies default to the rule that is most favorable to workers.

Additional Payroll Rules

Pay is important to the workforce. It makes sense that states have strict rules to protect their workers.

Honestly, I could write ten blog posts on payroll restrictions by state. But, that would be incredibly boring for most to read.

Instead, I’ve condensed major payroll rules down to a readable list. Below are state payroll rules that complicate hiring for remote companies.

• Fair scheduling with predictable schedules and adequate time between shifts
• Check deductions for uniforms, office equipment, and drug tests
• Meal time and breaks for eating/resting/nursing during work hours.
• Final pay determining how quickly a company must pay and whether it includes unused vacation days
• Sick days to pay employees when illness prevents working

Of course, companies are in business to make money. Part of that includes saving money whenever possible. States with high minimum wage, strict tax laws, and frequent pay cycles are less attractive to employers. As a result, its often easier (and more affordable) to skip over these states.

How to Find Remote Jobs in Your State

By now, you’ve learned way more than you wanted to about remote hiring rules. Hopefully, your excess knowledge explains why companies might not hire remote workers in your state.

Ideally, remote-friendly companies open up virtual doors to all applicants regardless of location. However, this isn’t the current state (no pun intended) of remote work in the US. 

Does that mean you’re out of luck if your state is often excluded from remote jobs? Of course not. You just need to fine tune your job search. 

Look Into Startups 

First, consider startups. Typically, a startup is a young company (less than 5 years old) that was founded to disrupt an industry. Airbnb, Angry Birds, Uber, and Instagram are all well-known and extremely successful startups. 

These newer companies want to hire the best talent to help fuel growth. To do this, startups often hire remote workers from around the world. Global hiring provides access to a much larger talent pool.

In fact, many startups build remote work right into their company culture. It’s really a win-win: The startup has tons of options to hire and candidates enjoy the perk of working remotely from almost anywhere.

Freelancing

Don’t want to rely on companies to hire in your state? No problem. Freelancing is a good solution. As a freelancer, you sell services to clients. Then, you bill the client for your services. 

Popular freelance skills include writing, editing, proofreading, transcription, and virtual assisting. This is a short list. Honestly, if you’re proficient in a computer-based skill you can sell it as a freelance service.

Freelancing is great for digital nomads or anyone who wants the freedom to work where and when they want to. This remote work type is also attractive to parents who need flexibility to work from home with kids. 

Self-Employment 

Today, it’s easier than ever to start your own online or home-based business (without resorting to MLM or direct sales). In fact, you can get a money-making website up in a matter of days!

Examples include e-commerce, Etsy shop, job board, and blog – to name a few. 

Plus, you can even start an online business. For example, bookkeeping, coaching, author, creator/crafter, content marketer, and consultant are businesses easily conducted entirely online.

As a bonus, self employment allows you to work anywhere with an internet connection. After all, you are your own boss!

You can’t control whether a company hires remote workers from your state. And, that’s okay.

Remember, companies can’t just decide to one day start hiring in a certain state. Instead, they have to go through long and expensive processes just to get set up. After, companies must continue to follow employment laws based on the state each employee works in!

Fortunately, your location doesn’t necessarily need to hold you back in your job search. Consider freelancing or self employment instead. Plus, there’s staffing agencies, startups, and job boards to help you find remote work in your neck of the woods.

Although online data entry jobs are one of the most sought after home-based opportunities, there’s not always a ton of options out there.  And sometimes, an advertisement may turn out to be a scam.

But, don’t worry, there are several companies that are known for hiring remote workers for data entry jobs. Curious to know where all the legitimate online data entry jobs are? Read on to find out!

What is involved with Online Data Entry Jobs?

It’s pretty simple: Online data entry jobs require you to key data from one source into another. The data you key can be letters, numbers, or a combination of the two — it just depends on the project you’re working on.

What Does it Take to Be Good at Data Entry?

To make the most of your efforts, you’ll need to be able to type quickly and accurately. Depending on the type of data entry involved, you may need to be comfortable using your keyboard’s number pad.

In addition to fast and accurate keying abilities, you’ll also need to be able to read quickly. You might be pulling data from a spreadsheet, document, or even handwritten notes.

Many online data entry jobs are paid by the number of correct keystrokes. So the greater your ability to quickly read/scan something and key it, the more money you’ll make.

Where Can I Find Legitimate Online Data Entry Jobs?

As popular as online data entry jobs are, there aren’t as many out there as you might think. In fact, it’s rather difficult to find companies that routinely have data entry jobs available. But, here are 7 top companies that offer legitimate home-based data entry jobs:

1. Axion Data

First up, let’s learn about Axion. This company is a well-known source of online data entry jobs. However, Axion is rarely hiring. In fact, its hiring page states:

There are currently no openings for data entry operators; however, that can change as we get new clients.  Our business is very cyclical, and there is no guarantee you will ever be contacted; nevertheless, you may choose to register with us for future consideration.

Also, Axion Data asks applicants to pay a registration fee. The fee structure is $5.00 for 60 days, $7.00 for 120 days, and $10.00 for one year. After registering, you are placed in Axion’s database.

Keep in mind, this fee does not guarantee work. In fact, Axion has incredibly low turnover. It’s unlikely you will every be contacted.

In other words, apply at your own discretion. Personally, I would skip this one. The fees are low, but it’s still a waste of time and money. Also, Axion says the require a fee to discourage thousands of unqualified people from applying. Even so, paying to apply for remote work is unnecessary. There are tons of companies that won’t charge you a single penny.

My suggestion? Skip it. Save your time and money. Instead, focus your attention on no-fee companies with online data entry jobs.

2. Xerox

Xerox has a virtual workforce program that includes a number of different career opportunities. A popular options include data entry, verification, and image tagging.

Keep in mind, Xerox isn’t always hiring. However, its jobs are updated often. Get in the habit of of checking the Xerox career page. Chances are, you will eventually find a data entry position posted.

As a bonus, there are plenty of virtual jobs outside of data entry. In fact, Xerox employs more than 8,000 home-based employees. I encourage you to check them out all the options here. You might find other virtual jobs outside of data entry that appeal to you.

As an added bonus, the majority of Xerox’s virtual positions are full-time employee ones, not freelance or independent contractor. This means you would be benefits eligible.

3. Telus International

This platform was officially launched in July 2021. Before then, it was Lionbridge (and before that it was Virtual Bee!).

There are several online data entry jobs here. First, you must create a profile and fill out contact information.

Next, take qualification tests. After that, you can accept paid assignments. Keep in mind, pay rates vary quite a bit.

Additionally, there are other online remote jobs to consider. Options include data annotation, online rating, data enrichment, and maps analysis. To get started, visit the AI Community Page.

4. OneSpace

OpenSpace (formerly CrowdSource) has on-demand online data entry jobs. In fact, there are two main sources of data entry work. These include Categorization and Classification.

To get started, submit a freelance application. After that, connect your PayPal account and pass qualification tests. You’re ready to access work on demand!

5. MicroWorkers

Next up, let’s look at MicroWorkers. There are data entry jobs here. However, you must sort through a lot of non-data entry jobs to find them.

Jobs here are broken down into small tasks. For example, simple tasks can take just a minute. Keep in mind, pay rates reflect the amount of time spent on each task.

As a result, most tasks pay between ten cents to four dollars. To get started, sign up for an account. Next, take MicroWorkers tests. Congrats! You’re ready to accept paid online data entry jobs.

6. Remotasks

Next, we have Remotasks. This is a newer site for online data entry jobs. Even so, it has a steady stream of new projects to complete. There are even long-term projects to consider!

When you’re ready, create a Remotasks account using Google or Facebook. Next, check your inbox. You will receive a welcome message with a quick-start guide. Keep in mind, some accounts can take up to 48 hours to complete. So, don’t worry if the welcome email doesn’t land in your inbox right away.

After that, you will complete an onboarding checklist in your account. From there, it’s time to start working on paid projects.

7. Appen

Personally, Appen is my go-to for online data entry jobs. For starters, there is a wide variety of data tasks to complete. Popular options include labeling images, moderating content, and categorizing social media.

Additionally, Appen frequently lands on the FlexJobs top companies with remote jobs list.

As a bonus, there are many other online jobs available too. For example, you can apply for long-term projects or part-time work.

To start quickly, simply sign up for an account. Then, select a project you want to work on. Finally, keep going! Now, you’re ready to work as much or little as you want whenever you want.

Remember, accuracy is important. Appen tracks all tasks. Consistent accuracy opens up even more, higher-paying projects.

Beware of Online Data Entry Jobs Scams

Finally, I want to touch on data entry scams. Unfortunately, there are plenty of scammers in the work from home world of data entry. In fact, scammers will pose as representatives of the companies listed above. They will reach out to you through social media or via email.

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to identify scammers. For starters, do not apply to data entry jobs on Facebook. Instead, go directly to the hiring pages of the companies listed above.

Additionally, do not respond to out-of-the-blue emails from recruiters. Companies only reach out via email to candidates after they’ve applied – not before!

Lastly, go with your gut. If you discover a job that sounds too good to be true, it likely is.

Living with a disability or chronic illness affects more than just a person’s health. Often, these individuals face financial and job-related challenges too. 

A 2019 study from the Bureau of Labor Statistics found the unemployment rate for persons with a disability was about twice as high compared to those job seekers without a disability. In this study, an unemployed person was defined as someone who was out of work, available to work, and actively looking for work. 

So, while many individuals with a disability regularly seek out employment, they face greater challenges to enter the workforce. 

Fortunately, we can bridge this employment gap. An obvious solution is remote work.

Remote Work Offers Greater Opportunities for All 

Remote work has a lot of benefits. No daily commute means time and money saved, but for disabled persons remote work means greater accessibility. Remote jobs make it easier to get to work (no commute) and allows work to be done in a controlled environment (home). 

So, when someone is unable to easily or consistently commute or is affected by a traditional office environment, telecommuting offers an opportunity to work without the daily obstacles of a traditional office job. Plus, some remote-friendly industries provide greater flexibility, which is helpful for anyone who has good days and bad days, flare ups or exacerbations. 

It’s also important to note that today, more than ever, there is a greater awareness of the need to help disabled persons gain financial independence through meaningful employment.

As the National Library of Medicine reports, being able to work contributes to a disabled person’s sense of self worth and purpose and improves individual and family finances. 

Flexible Remote Job Options

As a career coach that specializes in remote work, I often work with individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities to help them fill skills gaps and find remote work that fits their career ideals. Tailoring a job search to each individual person allows them to fit work into their lives — and not try to mold their lives around work. 

So, what are flexible remote-friendly industries that offer a chance for anyone with the right skills to gain employment? Here are my top 10 remote roles for individuals with disabilities: 

1. Writing 

Writing jobs come in a lot of shapes. There’s copywriting, grant writing, technical writing, SEO-writing — and so much more. 

Remote writers are typically paid per word, piece or project. Often, writers are hired on a contract or freelance basis. Rates for writers vary quite a bit! 

For example, a grant writer can earn roughly $50,000 annually, according to PayScale. While blog post writers average between $0.03 to $.10 per word. Writers with a solid understanding of search engine optimization (SEO) can earn upwards of $45,000 a year according to Salary.com. 

It’s important to pick a niche when launching a career as a nonfiction writer. Niche-specific training and certification allows you to quickly get established in your chosen writing path.

2. Customer Service 

Customer service does not mean you have to sit in a call center all day. Today, there are opportunities to work remotely as a chat agent, email rep, or even via text. 

Some companies, like LiveOps and NexRep, even allow agents to create their own schedules. In fact, agents can schedule blocks of time to work in increments as little as 30 minutes. 

You don’t necessarily need formal training to be a competitive entry-level remote customer service agent. However, it’s always a good idea to brush up on your customer service skills when looking for a new job.

Through LinkedIn Learning, you can hone your customer service skills and receive a certificate upon completion to show prospective employers you are ready to tackle work as remote customer representative. As a bonus, you can share your new certificate directly on your LinkedIn Profile which helps strengthen your position as a candidate.

3. Medical Billing & Coding 

Medical billing and coding professionals review patients’ charts and assign industry-specific codes to medical procedures. These codes are used by insurance companies to make payments to hospitals, doctors, and clinics. 

In a CNBC Jobs Report, it found more medical billing and coding jobs exist than qualified professionals to fill them. What’s more, this is an in-demand field that’s expected to grow faster than the national average. 

Keep in mind, you will need training and certification to be a competitive entry-level candidate. 5. Bookkeeping & Tax Preparation 

Nobody really likes to do their taxes. That’s why an estimated 60% of taxpayers hire someone else to do their taxes for them. Tax preparers are busiest from late January to early May. However, freelancers and the self-employed need tax help year round since they make estimated tax payments every few months. 

Bookkeepers are responsible for managing the flow of cash in a business. They keep track of all money coming in and going out. Unlike an accountant, bookkeepers do not need a degree. However, aspiring remote bookkeeping professionals should learn how to use popular bookkeeping software, like QuickBooks, through a bookkeeping training program.

6. Graphic Design

Graphic designers are the creative minds behind visual images. This can include logos, magazines, websites, and more. 

Often, graphic designers create marketing materials that sell products or help build brand awareness. Typically, a graphic designer does not need a four-year degree. Instead, post-secondary training in a design-specific program is appropriate. 

Through online training, like the Fundamentals of Graphic Design at Coursera, aspiring graphic designers study the basics of design and layout as well as learn how to use popular design software like Photshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.  You even complete a project you can use in your portfolio.

7. IT & Tech Support 

Tech support pros help consumers navigate an issue from a remote location. For example, internet, cable, phone and technology companies, like Apple, all use remote representatives to help their customers troubleshoot issues and come up with resolutions.

To be successful as a remote tech support rep, you need to be tech savvy and able to communicate complex instructions in an easy-to-understand manner.

Both programs prepare students for IT roles that are equal parts tech support and customer service.

8. Developer, Programmer, and Coder

Developers create the structure of websites, apps, games and software. They use a series of code to bring their ideas to life. 

The terms web developer, programmer and coder encompass a lot of different job titles. Some popular remote jobs in these areas include full-stack developer, DevOps, front-end developer, user experience designer, and so much more. 

To get started down this career path, it’s best to figure out which types of projects you want to work on. This will determine which type of coding language you need to learn to get hired. For example, if you want to work on apps, you would most likely need to learn Java or Swift. If you prefer gaming, Unity and Typescript are your best bets.

9. Virtual Assistant 

The one thing nobody can buy more of is time. So, many busy professionals opt to hire extra help to make the most of their time instead. That’s where virtual assistants come into play. 

A virtual assistant (VA), is an administrative professional who provides clerical and professional support from a remote location. VAs often help answer emails, schedule meetings, coordinate travel, and perform basic administrative functions. 

There are plenty of companies that contract with VAs to work remotely. As a VA you might work one on one with a single person, assist an entire team, or handle multiple clients at the same time. 

Familiarity with web-based applications like Google Drive is a must as well as calendar management and communication skills.

10. Copyediting, Proofreading, Fact Checking 

In a world that is content driven, there’s a high need for copy editors and proofreaders. Copy editors are typically the middleman between writers and publishers or readers. They often review and revise content and make corrections as needed. 

Book lovers and avid readers often make great copy editors. But, a solid grasp of grammar and knowledge of editing styles, like Chicago Manual of Style is a must too.
