Have a great phone presence? Want to work from home? You can! Learn how you can get a job as a virtual receptionist so you can work from home and not a cramped cubicle! Many customers expect businesses, large and small, be accessible 24/7. But for solopreneurs and small business owners it’s impractical (if not impossible) for them to field calls for their business or brand around the clock.

So, in order to maintain an ever-reachable presence, many entrepreneurs are turning to Virtual Receptionist Services to answer their calls for them, even when they’re unavailable or too busy to get to the phone themselves.

If you’ve got one of those voices that projects a smile and have a natural ability to establish rapport with customers and clients, this is a work from home job opportunity that offers steady work and is expected to grow in years to come.

Virtual Receptionist Services

You’ve probably heard of Virtual Assistant jobs and how they are very popular work from home options for administrative professionals.

Virtual Receptionist jobs are quite similar but require much more time on the phone answering inbound calls. In fact, these jobs are so phone-heavy that they are often referred to as virtual answering service jobs due to the volume of inbound calls you’ll answer in any given day.

Finding Virtual Receptionist Jobs From Home

A quick Google search will find a lot of cloud-based, virtual, and distributed answering and reception service companies. Although these companies offer virtual receptionist services, many of them operate physical call centers and do not hire remote workers.

However, there are a few legitimate companies that frequently hire at-home receptionists. Each operate a bit differently but, for the most part, hire reps to answer inbound calls for a variety of clients.

Gabbyville

Gabbyville is a well-known company that provides live receptionist and answering services. They also are known to hire virtual receptionist from around the U.S.

However, Gabbyville does not openly post their positions on their website. Instead, you’ll have to send over your resume and cover letter to express interest.

Be sure to highlight any industry-specific experience you may have. Gabbyville works with businesses in fields like accounting, finance, construction, real estate, and IT. A work history in any of these industries can make you a great fit for a virtual receptionist here!

Smith

As far as flexibility goes, working for Smith is second to none. Virtual Receptionists here can schedule themselves in blocks of time. The average shift is anywhere between 2 to 7 hours.

Receptionists are tasked with answering incoming calls from a variety of businesses. You may take a message, help book an appointment, or transfer calls to the appropriate contact.

To be considered, a great work ethic is a must along with previous receptionist experience. All candidates are hired and paid through Upwork. So, be sure to set up an Upwork profile that stands out for all the right reasons.

Vicky Virtual

Vicky Virtual hires receptionists to work from home across the United States. Their services are marketed to busy business owners who need an extra hand fielding the many inbound calls they receive on any given day.

As a Vicky Virtual Receptionist, 90% of your workday will be answering inbound calls using your computer and a headset. On occasion, you may communicate with clients and customers via live chat and email, too.

When answering phone calls for clients, you’ll need to follow guidelines for interacting with their customers and take a detailed message which will be forwarded to the client. You need a super-friendly demeanor, a phone voice that always projects a smile and be comfortable looking at a computer screen for the majority of your workday. A stable internet connection and an ability to type 50+ words per minute are also a must!

If this sounds like you, head on over to the Vicky Virtual Careers Page to start the application process. As a Vicky Virtual Receptionist you’ll be paid $10.00 per hour and also get a free Hulu Plus, Netflix, Spotify, Apple Music or Xbox Live subscription (bonus!).

Exec-u-sist

Like Vicky Virtual, Exec-u-sist hires Virtual Receptionists to work from home. However, Exec-u-sist works with companies large and small on a global scale and expect their Virtual Receptionists to provide services outside of just answering inbound calls.

As an Exec-u-sist Virtual Receptionist you will answer inbound calls, place outbound calls, and perform general administrative tasks. The nature of calls you’ll take and make will vary, but may include:

  • Appointment setting
  • Order processing
  • Pre-sales
  • Surveys
  • Confirmation calls
  • Callbacks

To work as a Virtual Receptionist for Exec-u-sist, you’ll need a distraction-free, quiet home office, high speed internet, and a personal computer running Windows 7 or higher. You’ll need to have a pleasant phone demeanor, stay calm under pressure, and be able to handle multiple calls at once. As part of their administrative offerings, Exec-u-sist requires their Virtual Receptionists to be familiar with Excel and be able to conduct basic research using search engines and social media.

Exec-u-sist operates 24/7 so there is a ton of room for shift flexibility! All Virtual Receptionists are W2 employees and not 1099 contractors. The pay rate starts at $10.00 per hour and there is room for advancement, pay increases, and referral incentives. Employees are also eligible for benefits and paid time off.

The Exec-u-sist application process is unique and is meant to gauge your suitability as a Virtual Receptionist. If you think you’ve got what it takes, you can get started with the hiring process here.

Freelance Virtual Receptionist Jobs

If you like the idea of working as a Virtual Receptionist, but prefer to do things on your own terms, you may want to consider offering freelance Virtual Receptionist services. Upwork is a freelancers’ marketplace that lists a variety of Virtual Receptionist positions that range from full time commitments to temporary gigs.

You need to bid on jobs at Upwork and also pay fees, but the number of jobs available at any given time make it much easier to find clients than if you tried to find them on your own (as I type this, there are currently 40 advertisements seeking Virtual Receptionists on Upwork alone). Similar sites like Guru and Freelancer also have Virtual Receptionist gigs listed, but at a much lower rate than what I’ve seen on Upwork.

Start Your Own Answering Service Business

If you like the idea of working on your own, but aren’t fond of the bidding and fees associated with freelance marketplaces, you could always start your own answering service business. You’ll need to market your services in order to land your first client (this very well may take some time!). But the benefits of sourcing your own clients means you get to charge your own rates and won’t have to pay out a percentage of your earnings.

Starting a home-based business is a huge commitment and requires a lot of time and effort, but if you have the drive to succeed, an Answering Service Business is a viable way (with a low startup cost) to earn a living from home each and every month.

I recommend checking out the 30 Days Or Less To Virtual Assistant Success to learn how to build a profitable VA business that includes a Virtual Reception service.

Happily,

Ashlee

Online side hustles are great but what if you need something more than that? No problem! You can find real work from home careers -- ones that offer stability and actually pay the bills each month. Here's how. Online side hustles are great. As extra income generators, they can pay down debt, boost savings, or even make ends meet between paychecks. But side hustles and online extra money makers are just that — ways to make a little cash here and there, not income you should count on.

And for some people this kind of work is the perfect way to make a buck or two on the side. But for others, it’s simply not enough. Instead, a real work from home career is required, you know, one that can pay the bills each month and is benefits eligible.

If you thought working from home or online was only good for beer money and rainy-day funds, think again. Today, many companies routinely hire career-seeking employees to work from home giving workers around the world an opportunity to build a career while working remotely.

Digital Nomads. Distributed Workforces. Telecommuting. Buzz Terms or Something More?

But before we look at work-at-home careers, let’s discuss what makes them so great. If you’re reading this, you probably fall into one of two camps:

  1. You’re definitely interested in working from home and are seriously considering joining the remote-worker ranks
  2. You’re curious about telecommuting but are wondering what all the hullabaloo is about

Whether you want to learn more or are convinced working from home is where it’s at, there are definitely some notable benefits.

Save Time

What’s your current commute? It takes the average U.S. worker 25.4 minutes to get to work. That’s a total of more than 50 minutes each day.  Let’s assume you go to work five days a week for 50 weeks out of the year — that’s a whopping 12,700 minutes spent in your car annually to get to and from work!

Granted, your commute may be shorter or longer (hopefully not the latter). Either way, we’re talking about some serious time logged behind the wheel each and every workday. When you work remotely, your commute is almost non-existent.

For me, it’s a seven-second walk down the hallway and a quick right. Most mornings I also have to contend with a persnickety gray cat sleeping in my office chair but, still, all in, I’m looking at less than a minute before I’m in said office chair and checking things off my to-do list.

And while most people think of the morning commute — don’t forget about evenings too! After a long day of work wouldn’t you much rather shut down your laptop and head straight to the kitchen instead of your car for rush hour traffic?

Save Money

Working from home is a money-saver. Big time. For starters, you don’t have to worry about filling up your tank to get to work. There are rarely expensive lunches eaten out. And you don’t have to dress to impress (most days) which means your work wardrobe budget isn’t sky high.

Plus, if you have car insurance that sets rates based on how much (or little) you drive, you’ll save tons of money each month because your car isn’t used for a daily commute. I was able to save 40% off of my car insurance after completing the Nationwide SmartRide Program:

completion-of-smartride-program-smithashlekristin-gmail-com-gmail

Bear in mind, my car is older and paid for so that makes my insurance much cheaper too but, in total, I pay less than $30 a month — working from home certainly helped slash my yearly insurance premium.

Happiness

My favorite benefit of working from home is happiness, but you probably already knew that. I’m not alone. A recent study found that not only are remote workers more productive, they’re happier. And who couldn’t use an extra dose of happiness in their life?

For me, the happiness stems from working where I feel most comfortable. But for others, a remote work environment might mean they get to help get their kids off to school in the morning and be home when they return. For those with a disability it means having accommodations in place that allow them to work independently. Really, it can mean a lot of different things to different people. What will your work from home happiness be?

Now, it’s also worth noting, there are some drawbacks to home-based employment. For starters, there can be a disconnect between you and your in-office coworkers. When there’s no watercooler to gather around or impromptu lunch outings and after-work happy hour, you miss out on some bonding time. If you’re a social butterfly and count your coworkers as some of your best friends, a home office environment may leave you feeling lonely and unfulfilled.

What Kind of Careers Are Out There?

If you’re convinced you want to give remote work a try, you’re probably wondering what career options are out there. Really, just about any job you could do in an office can also be done in a home office. That’s why more and more companies are embracing remote workforces. But if your current company doesn’t allow remote work, you’ll need to find some place that does.

Well-Known Companies and Familiar Brands with Employee Positions

You don’t have to look too far for home-based employment — some of your favorite companies are remote-friendly.

Apple

Through the Apple At Home Advisor Program, you can join one of the largest tech companies as a remote employee. Available positions include tech support, customer service, and chat agent.

Disney

The Disney Store’s ecommerce shop hires home-based employees to assist online shoppers with orders, returns, and any questions they may have.  Since they’re not always hiring, you’ll need to search their careers page for online guest representative.

American Express

At American Express cardholders get a lot of perks — and the same can be said for their home-based employees who receive great benefits and competitive pay. Home-based travel jobs and customer service positions can be found on their hiring page.

Amazon

The best way to get in at Amazon is during the busy holiday season but remote customer service positions can be found here year round. Head over to their careers page to see what is available at any given time.

U-Haul

There are several opportunities to join U-Haul — Roadside Assistance Agent, Reservations Representative, and Customer Service gigs can all be found here. Visit their home-based hiring page to learn more about each opportunity.

Of course, this is just a short list of some of the well-known businesses with work-from-home positions. Many brands opt to outsource their home-based jobs to larger companies who handle hiring. For example, Vimeo uses the Yeomen for their support and customer service. And popular brands like Bluefly and Skullcandy turn to VIPdesk Connect for help hiring agents to assist their customers.

Distributed Workforces

A distributed workforce is one where employees work virtually and from just about any location. This means the Marketing Director may check in from his or her home office in Seattle while the Human Resources Manager prefers a coworking space in Boston — really, these workforces are unique in that the majority, if not all employees, work from the location that makes the most sense for them.

Many startups embrace this style of remote working with many of them weaving it into their company’s culture. And this means you can find any number of career opportunities from developer to customer service, marketing, sales and everything in between — you just have to know where to look:

Remotive

Join the ranks of 20,000+ subscribers and receive biweekly tips and remote job leads from Remotive. You can also stop by their job board any time to see who is hiring — a variety of jobs from amazing companies like Zapier and Ghost can be found here.

AngelList

You know how I said many startups are embracing distributed workforces? Well, AngelList is the perfect place to find them — there are more than 21,000 startups hiring on AngelList, many of which have telecommute positions available. You’ll have to create a profile to browse jobs and apply to listing (it’s free), but once you do, you can easily apply to multiple jobs by using your existing profile.

LinkedIn

Are you on LinkedIn? As a freelancer, it’s a great way to connect with clients but it’s equally valuable for career-seekers on the hunt for remote work. You can let recruiters know you’re open to new job prospects and proactively search for positions. I frequently see telecommute positions here that aren’t widely advertised elsewhere!

Indeed

As the world’s largest job search engine, you never know what you’ll find on Indeed. But chances are, there are going to be quite a few work-from-home career positions at any given time. For example, a quick search of “remote” on Indeed returns more than 2,000 listings:

work from home jobs on Indeed
Granted, some listings may be freelance, contract or extra income gigs but many others will be for a variety of legitimate home-based career opportunities. If you’re not using Indeed on a daily basis, you’re seriously missing out. Give it a try, type remote in the “where” box below and start browsing (and applying) to remote positions today.

what where

city, state or zip

Company Career Pages

While Remotive, AngelList, LinkedIn and Indeed are great places to find a ton of work in one spot, they don’t have any and every available home-based career position out there. In fact, many companies with remote opportunities prefer to list openings directly on their hiring or career pages.

For example, Buffer, Upworthy and Meet Edgar are regularly-hiring remote companies that post available careers directly on their websites.

So, how do know which companies’ career pages are worth a look for remote jobs? Fortunately, there’s a super-useful public Google Docs that keeps a running list of startups and companies with distributed workforces. It may take some time, but it’s definitely worth browsing through and scouting out career pages that look promising for the type of work you’re seeking.

Work from Home Companies

Now that you know what’s so great about working from home, companies with remote teams, and where to look for jobs on your own — what are you waiting for? Take the time to brush up your cover letter and make your resume remote-friendly. And then start applying!

Feeling stuck in your remote job search? Need some advice? Have a question? Please, leave it in the comments section below, I’m always happy to help.

Work from anywhere companies seem to be popping up all over the place. And this is a good thing for those of us who wish to work from home, while traveling, or wherever we want.

It doesn't matter if you want to work from home or while traveling the world, these companies let you work wherever you want. These 5 Companies Let You Work Wherever You Want

Thanks to our ever-connected world where pretty much anything can be accomplished with a laptop and WiFi, companies can collaborate with workers around the world just as easily as they can with in-office staff. So, it’s not surprising to see an increase in virtual/remote/distributed workforces in companies across a number of industries.

Plus, when teams open their (virtual) doors to around-the-country or even global candidates, it gives them access to a huge pool of talent that otherwise would never exist.  Why limit your workers within a certain geographic boundary if you don’t have to?

These five companies asked that same question and, in doing so, have embraced virtual workforces–many of them even have 100% distributed teams. And the best part? They ALL are currently hiring remote/virtual/telecommute team members.

Note: Need a little extra help to kick your cubicle to the curb? Grab me ebook, The Ultimate Guide to Finding a Full-Time Remote Job. It’s on sale over at Gumroad and priced and whatever you want to pay!

1. InVision

InVision is a powerful design and prototyping tool. It transforms static screens into real-working, interactive, and clickable prototypes. Did I mention it’s free–forever? Twitter, Evernote, MailChimp, Netflix, and Zendesk are just a few of the well-known InVision fans.

When you join the InVision team, you’ll help designers change the way they create and collaborate on projects for online and mobile applications while working from a place of your choosing:

Who says you need to move to work at a great company? Not us. We know there’s great talent all over the place and we are a completely distributed company. Do great work from an environment that you’re comfortable in.

They employ talent in departments like sales, customer support, engineering, design, product, and marketing tools. And, working remotely may just not be the best perk of employment at InVision–they have some noteworthy benefits:

  • 100% personal health coverage
  • Half-day Fridays
  • Free Amazon books
  • Unlimited Starbucks card
  • Free gym membership (no doubt to counteract unlimited Frappuccino consumption)

They also have a commitment to learning and personal and professional growth. InVision has many remote positions available, my favorites include Customer Success Manager, Deep Thinking Product Designer, and Marketing Copywriter.

2. Edgar

My favorite startup on the list, Edgar is a social media management tool. It makes it easier and less time consuming for bloggers, entrepreneurs, and marketers to keep it consistent with their social media efforts. When you work at Edgar, you’ll be joining a small, fun-loving team who all work remotely:

Want a commute that’s only 30 seconds long? Think cats make the best officemates? Work with us, and work from home. (We don’t even HAVE a headquarters, unless you count our secret undersea laboratory.)

To work at Edgar is to be committed to their company philosophy.  It also means you get to call an octopus your boss. Check out their Careers Page for current job openings and available internship opportunities.

3. X-Team

X-Team recruits the best and most talented developers around the world, giving companies access to a scalable developer team they can trust. X-Team was founded in Australia but currently maintains a global presence:

We are 100% remote and believe in building a world where developers can have access to an environment of growth and incredible opportunities regardless of where they live. Our culture is based around the proactive, selfless values that make up every X-Teamer.

If you’re a top-notch, extraordinary developer, there may just be room for you in X-Team’s community. They also hire Ambassadors to recruit and attract the amazing aforementioned developers. Ambassadors and Developers alike should all have superhero qualities and get excited about making positive changes in the world.

4. Automattic

You probably know Automattic as the people behind WordPress.com and popular services like Jetpack and Akismet. When you work at Automattic, not only do you get to call yourself an Automattician, you get to choose where you work:

Everyone works from their own home or office, and we’re spread out all over the world — United States, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Iceland, Bulgaria, Australia, and more.

Automattic embraces the timezone variances of their workers rather than viewing it as an inconvenience since it allows them to operate pretty much 24/7. Working for Automattic lands you some pretty amazing benefits like coworking allowances to help keep you sane when working from home, an open vacation policy, and company-sponsored life insurance. Sound good? Community Organizer, Theme Wrangler, and Happiness Engineer are just some of the opportunities there are to become an Automattician.

5. Upworthy

Upworthy is committed to providing the best online content without all the filler and fluff–no click-bait headlines here, folks! Their curators scour the corners of the internet to help bring attention to things that actually matter (humanity & culture, diversity & equality, environment, and health, to name a few). These irresistible issues get shared on the Upworthy Community and take off from there–50 million people are engaged each month with some of the most important content thanks to Upworthy!

When you join Upworthy, you get to be part of a team that makes a social impact month after month. As if that wasn’t cool enough, you’ll also get to work from anywhere:

Virtual Social Media Jobs

If you’re anything like me, you spend a lot of time on soIf you love tweeting, pinning, posting, and snapping you may be the perfect candidate for one of these 5 remote social media jobs!cial media–pinning, tweeting, posting, snapping, sharing–it can actually be a lot to keep up with!

Corporations, startups, bloggers, and entrepreneurs know how important it is to stay relevant on social media, but keeping up with all the different platforms requires a lot of time and effort–it can be overwhelming. Knowing what to post and when, how to build an active and engaged audience and convert readers into customers is no easy task. Sometimes it just makes sense to outsource social media activities to individuals who know (I mean really know) social media.

So, if you consider yourself a Social Media Sensei, a Marketing Maven, a Jack or Jill of All-Things-Social Media and are able to create truly share-worthy content and campaigns, read on, you may just be the perfect Social Media Assistant/Moderator/Marketer!

eaHelp Virtual Social Media Assistant

eaHelp is a Virtual Executive Assistant (VEA) service provider. They match up virtual assistants with clients based on the needs of the client and the skills of each VEA. They also offer Social Media Assistants, too:

As a virtual social media assistant with eaHELP, you’ll be working with senior leaders from all industries – from Fortune 500 companies to fast-paced start-ups to non-profits dedicated to changing the world. You’ll be responsible for the ongoing management and growth of social media presence in alignment with the client’s business strategies and direction.

You will do a lot of collaborating with clients to identify their social media goals. Your job will be to manage accounts and come up with strategies to help accomplish those goals. You should be comfortable using many different social media platforms and understand best practices for each (like when is the optimal time to post).

You are qualified to be a Virtual Social Media Assistant if:

  • You know how to write engaging content for use on social media
  • Can use analytics tools to monitor growth and impact of campaigns
  • BA/BS in Communications OR 3+years corporate experience

This is a contract position (1099). Workload will vary depending on client need. You may have to pass a background check in order to work at eaHELP.

Affimity Social Media Moderator

Come. Engage. Belong. That’s Affimity’s motto. Currently in Beta, they are all about social channels. What’s a social channel, you ask? A social channel is an interest-specific gathering place. For example, Affimity just launched their Kardashian channel that, you guessed it, shares all things Kardashian.

There’s also channels for vegetarians, music, movies, fitness, health, automotive, random thoughts, working moms–whatever your interest, there’s a channel for you. They are adding new channels all the time.

They occasionally have openings for Social Media Moderators. Moderators are expected to promote and grow a specific channel by keeping content fresh and engaging with users. You will also read through channel content and make sure it’s a good mix of news articles and user-generated comments.

To be successful as a Social Media Moderator at Affimity, you will need to have an interest in and knowledge of certain channels. An ability to engage with others while promoting and growing channels is important, too!

Metaverse Mod Squad Social Media Moderator

Metaverse Mod Squad specializes in digital engagement. They help companies stay on top of their web presence. That’s where Social Media Moderators come in. At Metaverse Mod Squad, Moderators are part of engagement teams that interact with a company’s customers via chat, email, social media and forums.

Metaverse operates 24/7. They allow their Moderators to work when they can, so this is super-flexible! In addition to being social media savvy, mods (Metaverse lingo for Social Media Moderators):

Show strong attention to detail as well as the ability to work at a sustained pace in a production environment using a variety of CRM systems to engage with customers via ticket (web), live chat, telephone and social media.

You get to choose which projects you work on and when you work. A private home office and a high-speed internet connection are all you need to get started!

Appen Social Media Evaluator

Appen is a global company that often hires work from home professionals. Sometimes they have openings for search engine evaluators, transcriptionists, linguists, and translators.

They recently added a new job to their lineup: Social Media Evaluator.

As an Appen Social Media Evaluator, you will work to improve the relevancy of a global company’s news feed. To be a Social Media Evaluator:

You’ll need to commit to work 4 flexible hours a day, 5 days per week.  At least one must be a weekend day.  Once accepted for a project, you must meet consistent quality standards.  Superior performance will make you eligible for additional social media projects.

All work will need to be performed on a Mac or PC. You will need to read and write English and be able to complete tasks with little direction. This is an independent contractor position with lots of flexibility! If you are a daily social media user, then you are qualified to be an Appen Social Media Evaluator!

Time ETC. Marketing and Social Media Assistant

Time ETC. is a leading provider of virtual assistants–they’ve completed over 1,000,000 tasks for their clients! They’ve been around since 2007 and, in addition to VAs, hire Marketing and Social Media Assistants.

As a Marketing and Social Media Assistant, you will provide basic administrative support like a VA typically does but use your social media expertise to help clients, too:

Got marketing or social media experience? In addition to providing clients with general administrative and assistant support you will also be able to use your marketing and social media experience to help clients promote their businesses.

So you might be tasked with drafting some tweets or Facebook posts one day. The next day you might need to write blog posts. The day after that, you might focus only on administrative duties–you never know what your client will need on any given day.

This is a freelance position. There are no guaranteed hours. However, you should be available to respond to your clients and get tasks done during normal business hours as needed.

Indeed Jobs

Don’t forget about Indeed! You can perform a Social+Media+Jobs search to find any number of available positions. I frequently come across smaller companies, startups and other opportunities for remote Social Media Workers here.

Looking for non-phone work from home jobs? Learn what it takes to be a chat agent and where to find these popular work from home jobs!Work From Home Chat Agent Jobs

Chat agent jobs are popular telecommuting options for customer service pros.

As a chat agent, you answer customer questions through a series of chat exchanges. Many people are interested in chat agent jobs because they typically require no phone work, offer flexibility, and pay pretty well.

In recent years, there’s been a rise in the number of companies advertising Chat Agent Jobs. Customers want answers to their questions quickly and at any hour of the day.

To meet the demand for around-the-clock customer service, many companies are using work-from-home chat agents. Chat agents are able to answer customer questions quickly and more conveniently than having to pick up the phone.

Chat Agent Jobs and Where to Find Them

Let’s face it, it’s much easier to get a simple question answered via chat instead of having to pick up the phone, listen to recorded prompts, press 0, and be connected to an agent where you will wait on hold listening to background music.

Sure, sometimes you need to make a phone call as a customer like when you need to get in touch with your bank, cable or insurance company regarding an important or sensitive matter. But for all the other little questions we have as consumers, the idea of being able to initiate a chat session with a customer service rep makes the process so much simpler.

The convenience and ease of seeking help from companies via online chat is gaining popularity and companies are taking notice. This means lots of legitimate work from home chat agent jobs.

What is a chat agent?

A chat agent is a company representative who answers customer inquiries through an online chat platform. For example, I recently ordered an instant video on Amazon. There was a minor issue with getting the video across several devices. This wasn’t an urgent matter. So I contacted Amazon’s customer support center. Once there, Amazon recommended that I seek help via their online chat system:

work from home chat, applecare chat team, work from home chat jobs 2015, work from home chat support jobs hiring, chat agent jobs, work from home chat jobs, work at home chat agent, work at home online chat jobs

In a matter of seconds, I was connected with an Amazon representative who was able to solve my issue. Plus, while I was waiting for the chat agent’s responses, I was able to get other work done in a different window.

Amazon isn’t alone. Many companies, large and small, are turning to chat agents to provide quicker customer support to their customers.

As you can see, a chat agent works remotely to help answer customer questions or address their concerns. Chat agent jobs may involve customer service, technical support, or a combination of the two.

Do I need experience to apply for chat agent jobs?

You don’t necessarily need prior chat support experience to apply for chat agent jobs. You should, however, have previous customer service experience and a demonstrated ability to successfully resolve customer questions or complaints. It’s a bonus if you have technical support experience or are computer savvy enough to be able to troubleshoot issues remotely.

For the most part, companies want to know that you are comfortable interacting remotely with customers and are able to provide a positive experience for them. If you can do that, you can be a successful work from home chat agent.

And since you will be writing everything you ‘say,’ you’ll need to be able to put together coherent sentences. Being able to type quickly and accurately will also be essential as you may be managing multiple chat windows at once.

Are there any technical requirements for chat agent jobs?

Each chat agent job is different, but most of them will have certain technical requirements. For example, to apply for chat agent jobs, you will need a high-speed internet connection that is hardwired. This means no WiFi. There will also be speed requirements that your computer will have to pass including upload and download speeds.

You might also need a computer running certain versions of Windows or have a particular internet browser installed. Again, technical requirements will vary from job to job, but I have always seen high-speed, hardwired internet connections as being a must across the board.

Where can I find Chat Agent Jobs?

If you’re fairly certain you would make an amazing chat agent, good news, there are companies who routinely advertise chat agent jobs. Keep in mind, work from home chat jobs aren’t always available at these companies, but they do offer legitimate work from home chat opportunities when hiring.

Amazon

As you already know, Amazon hires remote chat agents to work from home. Amazon work from home chat agents are considered employees which means you could receive benefits (did I mention one of the benefits is employee discounts!?!?).

Amazon isn’t always hiring for remote customer support. They will ramp up hiring in the coming months as they prepare for holiday shoppers. In addition to work from home online chat jobs, they also offer email and phone support positions that work from home. Some of the chat agents jobs at Amazon are considered temporary. However, if you perform well, you may have the option to be hired on permanently!

Sometimes, Amazon has virtual (or “work-from-home”) positions available to qualified individuals who live in some areas. So if you aren’t near a physical Amazon location, or just want to see if there are virtual opportunities in your area, you’re in the right place.

If you’re really interested in working for Amazon as a virtual chat agent, it’s a good idea to bookmark their careers page and check it frequently. When they are hiring, they typically advertise chat agent jobs for a short time to cut down on the number of applications received.

Apple

Apple frequently advertises work from home chat agent jobs. These are known as At Home Advisors. As an AppleCare At Home Advisor you can provide a combination of customer service and technical support. Apple’s AppleCare Support is available 24/7/365. This means you may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Apple hires chat agents directly, but there are also companies that contract with Apple to provide customer support. If you are hired directly through Apple, you are an Apple employee with benefits. If hired by another company, you’re not. I always recommend waiting to apply until Apple is hiring since the pay is higher and the benefits greater (like an iMac and product discounts!)

You’re a problem-solver and amazing with customers! You’re enamored by the way things operate, and have the ability to figure out how technology works when things go wrong. You can multitask across systems and applications, analyze and resolve a variety of complex technical issues, and comfortably navigate a technical environment. You’re not only here to help fix technical issues, but also provide an incredible customer experience. Because you’ll work independently from home, you’ll need the discipline and ability to work remotely from coworkers and management. If this sounds like you, you could be the next At Home Advisor for our Chat teams.

When you search for “chat” openings on Apple’s Job’s Page, you’ll see a list of At Home positions by city and state. Please note, you do not have to actually reside in the city or state listed. Apple takes applications from candidates across the U.S.

Live Sales Staff

Live Sales Staff is a company that offers 24/7 chat services to companies. They contract with businesses who want to provide their customers the option to chat with a company representative should they have a question while browsing a website. This means as a chat agent for Live Sales Staff, you may be handling customer questions from several companies at once.

LSS is always looking to improve our already impressive family of superstars. If you think you have what it takes contact us, come online and show us what kind of skills you have.

If you’re interested in learning more about chat agent jobs at Live Sales Staff, you will have to inquire with them. It would be a good idea to write a cover letter that reflects your interest in working as a chat agent to submit with your inquiry!

Needle

Needle offers unique work from home chat agent jobs. If you’re interested in chat work at Needle, you need to fill out a profile. Then you will be asked to complete a series of skill and knowledge quizzes. Needle will review your profile and quizzes and see if you are a good fit for any available contracts. If you are, you will need to complete certification before you start working.

Needle has contracts with several companies and will match up candidates to these companies based on interests. For example, if you have a love for all things interior design you may be matched up with a company like Wayfair. If you are a fashionista, you might be a good fit for Coach. The idea is that your passion for products and/or companies, will make you a great chat agent representative for them.

Is there a brand or product that you can’t wait to tell others about? Do you consider yourself an expert? Do your friends and colleagues turn to you for advice? Consider becoming an Advocate, and help visitors to a brands website find the right product by giving your expert advice through chat. Earn money, product, and recognition from the brands you love.

If you get hired on at Needle as a Needler, you will be considered an independent contractor. In addition to an hourly rate, you will earn points which you can use to redeem products. This is pretty flexible work. You will be able to set your own schedule and chat with customers to help them find products they love.

Talk2Rep

NOTE: Some applicants are reporting that Talk2Rep is asking them to pay some kind of a training fee to get started. This is not okay! Talk2Rep used to not do this. If you go through the application process and Talk2Rep asks you to pay any kind of fee, I advise not to do it.

Talk2Rep provides custom chat windows for websites. This gives site visitors the opportunity to engage in a chat session should they have any questions or concerns. Visitors are able to easily ask questions and get answers in real time. By offering these services, the idea is that visitors can more easily convert into customers.

From time to time, Talk2Rep will have openings available for chat agent jobs. Most of these positions are sales oriented. You would be paid a bonus for any sales that you make via chat.

Sales Chat Agents play a vital role, liaising between various customers and the business entities in which we represent. As a Sales Chat Agent, you would be chatting with existing and/or non-existing customers of one of the top telecommunications companies in the nation! You would consult these customers and assist them in trying to see which products are offered that would benefit them. Enjoy answering customer questions, receiving bonuses for your sales and being a part of an up and coming trend  – which is Chat!

If interested, you must go through their online application. Please note, Macs are not compatible with Talk2Rep’s chat platform. You must have a Windows PC to apply. If you have prior sales experience, you are encouraged to apply!

Support.com

At Support.com, you’ll work to support the people who support technology. In other words, you’ll be helping customers of technology companies (think internet service providers).

They’re not always hiring for their chat agent role. However, when they are, it is very much entry-level support work — i.e., no previous experience required.

This is an exciting work from home opportunity requiring you to work and engage with others in a virtual environment, while providing our customers with a high quality customer service experience.

This is an employee position which means you’ll be entitled to benefits! The pay rate starts at $10.50/hour. You’ll also earn an additional $0.50 for each hour worked to help cover your home office expenses.

Site5

Site5 is a hosting provider. If you’re not familiar with the term, ‘hosts’ are the landlords of all the websites you see online. Website owners pay a small fee each month to park their websites on the servers of the many different hosts out there.

And since Site5’s customers are mainly website owners, their chat agent role is specifically meant to support them. This means you’d be helping answer everything from billing questions and presales inquiries to resolving tech support issues.

Site5 does not list openings directly on their website. Instead, you’ll have to keep an eye on Indeed. I recommend setting up an alert so you’ll be notified the next time Site5 is accepting chat agents — it’s easy and free.

What else should I know about work from home chat agent jobs?

It can be competitive to get into a work from home chat agent role. The companies who routinely hire chat agents receive an overwhelming number of applications. Your best bet to get hired on is to make yourself standout as an ideal chat agent amongst the sea of candidates.

How to showcase yourself as an ideal chat agent:

  • Highlight any previous customer service experience you have (virtual or not)
  • Note any sales experience (many times these chat agent jobs mix in a bit of sales with support)
  • Mention your typing speed (most companies want you to type 50WPM or more)
  • Show your writing skills (chat agents do a lot of writing, you need to have good spelling and grammar skills!)

In addition to the companies listed above, you should also remember to check Indeed Jobs. There you can find a number of different companies advertising chat agent jobs. In fact, just recently OkCupid was seeking email and chat support reps to work remotely.

Search Engine Evaluator jobs are super-flexible ways to earn money online.

Working from home as a Search Engine Evaluator is a popular virtual work option mostly because the pay is reasonable and there is absolutely zero phone work involved.

Since several companies hire Search Engine Evaluators and similar positions, there always seems to be opportunities available at any given time, you just have to know where to look.

If you’re internet savvy, comfortable navigating different content, and have a variety of interests and a broad knowledge base, you may just be the perfect Search Engine Evaluator.

What is a Search Engine Evaluator?

You probably haven’t put a lot of thought into how search engines work. After all, search engines, like Google, spend a lot of time and effort into creating algorithms that are meant to give search engine users better results. But did you know there’s a human element to crafting the perfect search result, too?

That’s where Search Engine Evaluators come into play. Search engines are not perfect. And so groups of people, called Search Engine Evaluators, use their knowledge of current events, popular culture, people, and places to rate search engine return results. The hope is that by doing so, users will be given perfect search results each and every time they enter a query into a search engine.

How does Search Engine Evaluation Work?

Let’s say you type the term “Hilton Reservations,” into a search engine. Your most likely intent is to book a room at a Hilton Hotel. But let’s say the search engine gives you a few results about restaurant reservations in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

On the next page of results, there are news articles about Paris Hilton reserving an entire nightclub for her birthday part. You probably won’t be too interested in Hilton Head restaurants or Paris Hilton updates since you were looking to book a room at a Hilton Hotel.

Search Engine Evaluators rate the relevancy of search results based on user queries (queries meaning the terms being searched for, in the above example, Hilton Reservations was the search query).

Where search engines are quite literal in their interpretation of queries, humans can use their knowledge of news, events, and culture to rate search returns based on a user’s likely intent.

What does it take to be a Search Engine Evaluator?

Search Engine Evaluators are heavy internet users. They are comfortable navigating websites, search engines, and generally know how to find things online. A Search Engine Evaluator stays up-to-date on news, current events, and pop culture. They know how to interpret search queries to determine a user’s most likely intent.

So, if you are interested in becoming a Search Engine Evaluator, you should be very familiar with the culture and language of a particular area (often Search Engine Evaluator positions are location based, i.e., United States, Philippines, Netherlands, etc.)

Let’s use Paris Hilton as an example again. Imagine you type “Paris Hilton” into a search engine. Your likely intent is to find current news or biographical information about Paris Hilton. But a nonnative English speaker, unfamiliar with American pop culture, might interpret Paris Hilton to mean Hilton Hotels in Paris, France. You see where the confusion can come in?

It’s important to understand the subtleties of language and the double-meanings of some words because you will be rating search engine results based on user intent (i.e., Paris Hilton and Hilton Hotels in Paris are two very different things!).

Where can I find Search Engine Evaluator Jobs Online?

There are a number of companies that hire various Search Engine Evaluator positions. Often these are contract, part-time positions. However, if you are good rater, you may be given the option to extend a contract.

So, which companies hire Search Engine Evaluators?

If you’re interested in Search Engine Evaluator work, you’ll be happy to know there’s usually at least one opportunity hiring at any given time. In fact, just about every week, I post at least one updated job lead.

Appen

Appen is an award-winning company that helps companies expand into global markets. How do they do this? They are experts in languages and are capable of presenting businesses in over 150 languages. Appen often has work from home positions available, and not just in Search Engine Evaluation. They also offer transcription, translation, and linguist services in tons of different languages. But their more popular position is that of Web Search Evaluator:

Be part of a rapidly growing global network of independent contractors working as Web Search Evaluators! If you are looking for interesting work that adapts to your lifestyle, you have come to the right place. As a Web Search Evaluator with Appen, you will be rewarded for your ability to improve internet search engine results and performance. We offer flexible work schedules, competitive pay, free training, and the ability to work from home.

Appen has recently expanded into Social Media Evaluation, too. This means you can actually get paid to use social media. A Social Media Evaluator works to improve the relevancy of a large tech company’s news feed. Both the Web Search Evaluator and Social Media Evaluator positions are part-time, contract positions.

As a Web Search Evaluator, you typically need to have availability five hours a day, Monday through Friday. Before you are paid to work, you need to go through training which will include practice ratings and tests. If you meet their quality standards on a consistent basis, you can start getting paid!

Leapforce

Leapforce is a well-known company often hiring work from home agents around the globe. As they continue to grow, Leapforce has offered an increasing number of At Home Independent Agent positions. Leapforce is great for bilingual and multilingual candidates because they hire for multiple languages within one country. For example, I often see advertisements for At Home Agents in the United States for candidates that can speak English, Spanish, Chinese, and even Farsi!

Leapforce is experiencing unprecedented demand and growth for qualified home-based independent agents. We are looking for highly educated individuals for an exciting work from home opportunity. Applicants must be self motivated and internet savvy. This is an opportunity to evaluate and improve search engine results for some of the world’s largest internet search engine companies.

Recently, Leapforce added a new position to their At Home Independent Agent lineup called Personalized Search Engine Evaluator. Agents working on this project will be given tasks based upon their personal Google account. Ideally, Agents interested in the Personalized Search Engine Evaluator position are active Google users including Google Play, Google+, and Gmail.

If you’re interested about learning more about the At Home Independent Agent position at Leapforce, you can read up on the position requirements and look through their FAQs.

iSoftStone

iSoftStone often hires Search Engine Analysts for long-term projects. As a Search Engine Analyst, you may be rating the relevancy of landing pages or ads. I’ve worked for iSoftStone as a landing page rater. The support was great, the training extensive, and the flexibility amazing.

iSoftStone is looking for a On line Web Evaluator to join our team in the United States. As an evaluator, you are responsible for rating the content returned by search engines, using in-depth local knowledge of current events, pop culture, news, media and history. This position gives you the opportunity to participate in a long-term project focused on improving the web experience for your country. You will have flexible working terms and work from the comfort of your own home.

The pay rate for Search Engine Analysts starts out at $13.00 per hour. However, if you can consistently work 30+ hours a week and are an accurate rater, you can be bumped up to $14.00 an hour. Raters who work often and with a high-degree of accuracy can earn up to $15.00 an hour. Plus, after 20 hours of work, all raters become eligible for a $50.00 bonus!

You are assigned a point of contact who will guide you through training and answer any questions you may have. As part of training, you are given a 70-something page manual that demonstrates how to rate ads. It is really long and very text heavy. Admittedly, I barely read it through the first time (even though iSoftStone strongly recommends you read it carefully through, twice!).

When I went to take my test, I did not pass the first time, but my score was close enough that I was able to retake the exam. I ended up passing the second time around.

iSoftStone projects work with Bing search engine. So you must use Internet Explorer to work and install a browser extension to submit your ratings. The pay was reasonable, the support was great, and the nature of the work was okay. All in all, I would not hesitate to recommend iSoftStone to anyone wanting to work as a Search Engine Evaluator.

ZeroChaos

Out of all the Search Engine Evaluator companies, ZeroChaos pays the highest at $15.00/hour. They are also the only company to hire Evaluators as W-2 employees (all the other opportunities are 1099 contract positions). ZeroChaos has projects that work to improve Google ad results.

ZeroChaos is recruiting temporary part-time telecommuters with fluency in one of these languages and an in-depth knowledge of their culture to help with Ads Quality Rating for websites for our client, a leading search engine company. We are looking for average internet users to help improve the accuracy/relevancy of the ads that are placed with search results and on websites.

You know how when you search for something in Google, you see paid results or ads at the very top? As an Ads Quality Rater for ZeroChaos, you will be helping to improve the accuracy of these ads as well as ads on webpages. I like that ZeroChaos allows you to rate/review ads on a computer or smartphone.

As an Ads Quality Rater, you must commit to a minimum 10 hours per week (but no more than 29). You can work these hours at any time, as long as they’re completed within the assigned week. Once your timesheets are approved, you are paid once weekly via direct deposit.

ZeroChaos typically advertises job openings on the larger Craigslist markets (Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, etc.) At this time, you must be a United States resident since ZeroChaos does not hire workers outside of the U.S.

Get Started as  a Search Engine Evaluator

If you think you would make a great Search Engine Evaluator (or ads rater, social media evaluator, or personalized search engine evaluator), you can get started by applying to whichever opportunity or company sounds the most promising. You can’t go wrong with any one of them–Appen, Leapforce, iSoftStone, and ZeroChaos are all reputable companies that pay their workers on time.

If you’re not particular about a certain company or position, perhaps apply to all of them. Remember, no matter which opportunity you choose, working as a Search Engine Evaluator offers good pay, flexibility, and an overall great way to earn money online.

Remote Jobs at Fortune 500 Companies

Remote jobs are becoming more and more popular at some big-name companies. Employers realize the value that virtual workers bring to their companies and recognize that, in general, individuals with remote jobs are happier. And happy workers means lower turnover rates and a healthier company culture.

So if you’re new to work from home opportunities or are simply looking for a legitimate virtual opportunity, read on to learn about Fortune 500 Companies that offer remote jobs.

For over 60 years, Fortune has ranked companies by their total revenue each year. Some of the biggest companies in the world offer work from home jobs. This list includes different remote jobs at reputable Fortune 500 companies.

In total, the Fortune 500 companies account for $12.5 trillion in revenues, $945 billion in profits, $17 trillion in market value and employ 26.8 million people worldwide.

Any time I see a remote job listed for a Fortune 500 company, I’m quick to share it. Why? Many people still believe that remote jobs and virtual opportunities are all scams. When well-known, high-revenue companies offer remote jobs, it gives a little extra credibility to the entire work-from-home space.

So, to help spread the word about legitimate remote jobs, I’ve compiled a list of Fortune 500 companies with remote job opportunities.

Apple

Every time I check Apple’s career page, there are several remote jobs available. Some of the remote jobs Apple hires for includes:

  • At-Home Team Manager (leading a team of remote technical-support providers)
  • At-Home Advisor AppleCare Phone Team (providing support over the phone)
  • At-Home Advisor AppleCare Chat Team (providing support via chat and email)
  • At-Home Advisor AppleCare iTunes Phone Team (troubleshooting software, billing, or access issues)
  • At-Home Advisor AppleCare Spanish (bilingual multi-support position)

These positions are all employee-based which means you are entitled to benefits (including a free iMac to help you get the job done!) When searching jobs, put “chat” or “remote” in the search field depending on which of the jobs you are most interested in. I know the work from home chat support agent jobs are always popular, so you would want to search for “chat” to see a list of the current openings.

CVS Health

The work from home jobs available with CVS are typically sales based. Sales Executive, Strategic Account Director, and Territory Sales Executive are some of the remote jobs frequently available.

Many of the opportunities are open to individuals across the US, but some require that you live in a particular state or region. For example, the Field Service Technician job will specify which area of the United States you will need to reside in in order to apply.

There are too many CVS Health remote jobs to list here. If you’re interested, head on over to their Careers Page. You can try searching by keyword or location in order to find the opportunity that is right for you.

United Health Group

United Health Group has a lot of remote jobs available for professionals of all experience levels within a variety of fields. From a Senior Java Developer to Relations Representatives and even an Economics Consultant, there really are remote jobs available at United Health Group no matter your experience or profession.

What’s great about United Health is many of their job listings given candidates the option to work in-office or remotely. So, be sure to read any of the remote jobs listed carefully to see if telecommuting is an option. When you land on the United Health Group Careers Page, type “telecommute” in the keyword search box. This will pull up a list of their positions that are remote or have the option to telecommute.

Amazon

Amazon does not shy away from offering remote jobs to its candidates. In fact, when you’re on the Amazon Jobs page, there’s an entire section devoted to Work From Home:

Sometimes, Amazon has virtual (or “work-from-home”) positions available to qualified individuals who live in some areas. So if you aren’t near a physical Amazon location, or just want to see if there are virtual opportunities in your area, you’re in the right place.

Amazon remote jobs can be found across their many services like Amazon Local, Amazon Destinations, and their Prime offerings.

When it gets nearer to the Holiday Season you’ll see a sharp rise in the number of remote jobs available at Amazon. During the busy shopping season, Amazon ramps up their hirings for their customer service positions which includes chat, phone, and email support. The good news is, some candidates may be extended an offer to continue work after the holidays. So if you have your heart set on working with Amazon, the holidays are the perfect opportunity to get your foot in the door. If you perform well, you can potentially land a permanent position!

American Express

American Express is known for providing first-class service to their cardholders. This level of service is not lost on its employees. Day 1 benefits and bonus opportunities makes American Express one of my favorite work-from-home opportunities to share.

Remote jobs at American Express include two very popular options Customer Care Professionals and Travel Counselors.  Like Amazon, American Express gears up for the holiday season by adding remote jobs to their Travel department.

Aside from these two remote jobs, there are any number of options available. American Express has a global presence and hires virtual workers around the world. When at their Careers Page, search for “Virtual” openings, as this seems to be the preferred term for their remote jobs.

Capital One

Known for their financial offering like auto loans, credit cards, and bank accounts, Capital One frequently posts remote jobs for workers in certain locations.

The job I most frequently see advertised is their Work at Home Customer Service Specialist. As the title suggests, it mostly consists of fielding phone calls related to account inquiries. Although these are work from home positions, you may need to reside within 75-100 miles of a particular location. For example, I recently saw openings for Customer Service Specialists in and around the Tampa Bay area. Capital One requires that you show up in office on certain days during the training phase (but most of training is completed from home).

The Capital One Careers Page is a little tricky to navigate. I’ve found it easiest to simply click on “Explore Jobs” and filter down from there. There is no option to search by keyword so you kind of have to keep your eye peeled for remote jobs.

Xerox

Xerox is a great place to find remote jobs. In fact, they have an entire section dedicated to, what they call, their Virtual Workforce Program. Xerox is one of the first companies to recognize the importance of offering virtual jobs. They’ve been hiring virtual workers for the last 30 years or so.

According to their Careers Page, they currently have over 8,000 virtual workers filling virtual jobs in areas like:

  • Customer Service
  • Tech Support
  • Image Tagging
  • Quality Control
  • Admin Support
  • Programming

Plus, Xerox is one of the few companies that offers legitimate work from home data entry jobs. Xerox also has their Heroes@Home Program:

Through our Heroes@Home program, we hire qualified veterans and military spouses for at-home employment opportunities. In the past year, we’ve had job placements for customer care agents, image processors, data analysts, help desk specialists, systems developers, leadership roles and many other positions.

So no matter your skills sets, experience, or profession, chances are you can find remote jobs at Xerox that are a good fit for you.

Humana

Where can you find remote jobs ranging from a Certified Medical Coder to a Network Security Consultant? The answer is Humana.

Humana is an insurance provider but also tries to help their members live healthier lives. This mission seems to hold true for its employees too. Some of the benefits that come with Humana remote jobs aim to give their employees a healthier life.

If you’re interested in pursuing a career with Humana, you can search their Careers Page using the keywords Virtual, Remote, or Work From Home. This will pull up all of their remote jobs since Humana uses these terms interchangeably to identify their remote opportunities.

USAA

USAA is a financial services company that focuses on members of the U.S. Military and their families. I frequently see remote jobs advertised for them in a number of different fields. So whether your background is in finance, IT, or underwriting, chances are you can find suitable remote jobs at USAA.

For example, remote jobs I’ve recently seen advertised were for their Risk-Compliance and Data/Analytics departments. To see their current openings, you can search their Careers Page using the keyword Remote. This will let you see the remote jobs available.

Prudential

Prudential is one of the largest financial services company helping its customers grow and preserve their wealth. It’s no surprise then that some of the remote jobs available with Prudential involve discussing and explaining retirement options with clients.

These positions are referred to as Communication Consultants, and while I frequently see the Retirement Plan Communication Consultant position, there are other ones available too.

Although these are remote jobs, most of them come with travel requirements at least part of the time.

If you’re interested in learning more, the Prudential Careers Page is easily searchable by keyword.
