And I knew, more than anything, that I wanted to become a freelance writer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And, like you, my first question was simply \u201c<strong>how to become a freelance writer<\/strong>.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, the answer wasn\u2019t quite so easy to come by. And, <a href=\"https:\/\/workfromhomehappiness.com\/starting-a-freelance-writing-career-with-no-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my journey from corporate world to freelance writer freedom<\/a> was anything but glamorous.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, for you, times have changed. And, today, it\u2019s much easier to figure out how to become a freelance writer. There are a number of people, myself included, who\u2019ve been in your shoes (and are willing to share their wisdom with you!).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, without further ado, this is my no-frills, no-fuss, straightforward advice to how to become a freelance writer in three stupid simple steps.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>You Don\u2019t Need Experience To Become A Freelance Writer<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Fact: You do not need professional writing experience to become a freelance writer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I promise.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Writing <em>is not<\/em> something that requires years of formal education. Heck, it doesn\u2019t even require previous experience.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0You also don&#8217;t need:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A college degree<\/li>\n<li>Tons of writing samples<\/li>\n<li>To have written professionally before<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What it does take, however, is the passion to write. Without that inherent passion to put words to paper, you will burn out. Quickly. And that\u2019s no fun.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trust me. I know.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I never wrote professionally. And I certainly didn\u2019t know how to become a freelancer writer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, I did have the desire to learn AND a passion for writing. Sound familiar?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Good news! You\u2019ve got what it takes to become a freelance writer. A desire to learn and passion to write are <em>the only prerequisites<\/em> to figuring out how to become a freelance writer!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Got it? Good! Now that that\u2019s out of the way, let\u2019s get started.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step1: Niche Down<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A newbie freelance writer benefits from having a niche.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A niche is a specific subject, topic, genre, or industry you\u2019ll write about.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For example, when I decided to become a freelance writer, I opted for the legal niche. I wrote specifically for lawyers, law firms, and corporate legal departments.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, that\u2019s not the only niche out there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are TONS of niches you can choose to write about.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Which niche you decide will likely depend on your knowledge, experience, and interests!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Feeling stuck for a niche? But that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In fact, your niche will make it easier to find clients. How so?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you know who your potential clients are (for me it was lawyers), it\u2019s much easier to find them. And once you find them, it\u2019s easier to market to one specific group, instead of trying to please all niches at once.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, before you start worrying about things like portfolios, rates, and contracts, be sure to pick a niche.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note: You can absolutely have more than one niche. And, over time, your niche might change. That\u2019s okay. But, in the very beginning, pick a niche and stick with it. You\u2019ll find it\u2019s much easier to become a freelance writer with a well-defined niche than without one.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Get Some Writing Samples<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When you pitch a potential client (more on that later), they will want to see samples of your past work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, this is where most newbie start to panic. They now start asking questions like how to become a freelance writer if I have no writing samples?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy!<\/p>\n<p>You write them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember, you\u2019ve already picked a niche at this point. Woohoo. And, while you haven\u2019t yet written anything as a paid freelance writer, it doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t go ahead and write them for free.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I did.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Power of Guest Posting<\/h3>\n<p>You see, I knew I wanted to write for lawyers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And I knew that most of the lawyers I would write for would need blog posts for their websites. So, I started looking online for legal-niche websites that accepted guest blog posts. In case you don&#8217;t know, a\u00a0guest blog post is typically a one-off contribution from a non-paid contributor.<\/p>\n<p>Some blogs and websites allow the general public to write guest posts that are published on their site. You likely won\u2019t get paid for your work. But you will get a byline (a mention of your name) and a valuable link you can show off to potential clients!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trust me, when it comes time to pitch, these bylines and guest post links are priceless. Having several guest blogs published on well-known, reputable legal websites helped me land some of my more lucrative freelance writing jobs as a newbie.<\/p>\n<p>So, before you move on. Stop!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Think about your niche. Picture your target client. Determine what kind of content they\u2019ll want.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, hop onto Google and start searching for blogs and websites within your niche that accept guest posts.<\/p>\n<p>You can also check out this awesomely detailed guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.websitehostingrating.com\/list-of-200-websites-that-accept-guest-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sites that take on guest contributors<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Once you complete this step, you\u2019ll have real world samples of your writing skills, published and ready to be viewed when a would-be client inevitably asks to see examples of your work!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Know Where To Look For Work<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Learning how to become a freelance writer also means learning where to find work as a freelancer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are several ways to find your clients:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cold emailing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Freelance websites<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Content mills<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Job search sites<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each have their pros and cons. And, as a newbie, don\u2019t be afraid to try them all. Chances are, you\u2019ll find one (or more) that works best for you. For me, it was a combination of cold emailing and freelance websites.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Cold Emailing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When you cold email, you are asking someone to hire you out of the blue. This sounds scary. And, it can be, but it is something you should consider doing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can find potential clients to cold contact on LinkedIn. If you\u2019re not not on this mega-networking powerhouse yet, what are you waiting for?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Use these <a href=\"https:\/\/workfromhomehappiness.com\/linkedin-profile-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tips to create a powerful LinkedIn Profile<\/a> that gets views!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can also use Google to your advantage. I would google law firms and lawyers in different metropolitan areas. It was easy to find their contact information. And, in a matter of minutes, I could introduce myself, my services, and send out several pitches.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Pros of Cold Emailing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>You find your own clients<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t have to pay fees to anyone for work performed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Cons of Cold Emailing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s time consuming<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>You may get less than favorable responses<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Freelance Websites<b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Sites like Upwork, Guru, Freelancer, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/workfromhomehappiness.com\/freelance-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">freelance marketplace sites<\/a> exist to connect freelancers and clients. Essentially, they serve as the middleman between you and your clients. That also means these sites take a cut of your earnings. How much, you ask? It depends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, expect to cough up as much as 10% of money earned.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unlike cold emailing, you will not have to search google or scour LinkedIn to find potential clients. Instead, you\u2019ll find a list of active jobs posted by clients looking to hire N-O-W.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You then send in your pitch telling the client why they should hire you over the hundreds of other freelancers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, you\u2019ll get hired. Sometimes, you won\u2019t.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Payments are handled through the freelance site. And clients can leave feedback to let others know how easy (or difficult) you were to work with and the quality of the work received.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Pros of Freelance Websites<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Thousands of jobs right at your fingertips<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Payments are handled for you<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Cons of Freelance Websites<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Have to pay fees on earnings<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Competition can be fierce<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Content Mills<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Okay. I\u2019m gonna come right out and say it: Content mills are controversial.<\/p>\n<p>Some freelance writers cannot stand them. They think that these content mills cheapen the industry as a whole.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Others don\u2019t have too much of an issue with them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I fall in the latter camp.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You see, the issue with content mills usually stems from the pay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Content mills get their name because they are sites clients use to mass order writing for cheap. The content mill, in turn, farms out the writing assignments to freelancers. The pay rate is often as little as $0.01 per word (or less in some instances!).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written for a content mill called Textbroker. Yes, I worked hours on some assignments making way less than minimum wage. But, I knew that going into it. You can also use them to help you figure out how to be a freelance writer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Indeed<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s simple. Traditional job search sites, like Indeed, make it easy to narrow down postings to freelance-friendly options. Clients posts ads specifically looking for writers for hire. Browse through these sites DAILY. You never know what you\u2019ll come across!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Again, the method you use to find work will depend on what works for you. For me, it was a combination of content mills, job search sites, and freelance marketplaces. Once you get into it, you too will find the right combo of work to keep you flush with clients!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How To Become A Freelance Writer: Pitch Like A Pro<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You have a niche. You know where to find work. But how do you actually get hired as a freelance writer?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where pitching comes into play.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A pitch is your virtual elevator speech. It\u2019s a short and concise rundown of why a client should hire you (and not Freelance Writer Jane or Joe over there).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Effective pitching can make or break your freelance writing career. No pressure, right?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry. Pitching becomes second nature after awhile. And, like any freelancer, you\u2019ll refine your pitch the longer you\u2019ve been at it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, as a newbie, here are a few quick and dirty tips to remember about pitching:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Be Specific<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you find an ad looking for a freelance blogger. Tell the client why you would be a great blogger. Don\u2019t write in general terms. Tell them you write blog posts that are engaging, informative, and share-worthy. Always sell your services in terms of what the client is looking for.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Be Confident<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t act like you\u2019re new to the freelance writing game (even if you are)! Tell the client you\u2019d be great for the job because of XYZ. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Be Enthusiastic<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are a lot of jobs you\u2019ll pitch for that aren\u2019t exactly your ideal client. That\u2019s okay. Always sound enthusiastic, but never desperate. Let a client know you look forward to working with them and would welcome the opportunity to discuss the project further.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Be Proud<\/h3>\n<p>Link to your previous work (why it\u2019s important to submit guest posts!). It\u2019s infinitely better to show linked proof to work than send attachments in pitches \ud83d\ude42<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Be Kind<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Nobody likes to work with a jerk, right? So, always, always be kind in your pitches. Don\u2019t come off as short or curt. Don\u2019t appear to be overly confident.
