4 Fresh Freelance Ideas That You (Probably) Haven’t Thought Of Yet
Coming up with freelance ideas is easy. The hard part is finding a service that sells.
You can offer just about any service as a freelancer. But, whether or not you make any money depends on a few factors:
- how in-demand it is
- how saturated the market is
- how well you promote yourself and your services
The good news is, every day there seems to be a new way to earn money as a freelancer. You are only limited by what new skills you are willing to learn. Sounds appealing, right? It is!
To give yourself a head start, think about offering freelance ideas that are growing in popularity, but haven’t quite caught on as mainstream just yet. By the time others catch on to how amazing (and lucrative) those services are, you will already be well established and on your way to being the go-to expert!
Podcast Producer
Podcasting is an effective way for businesses, brands, and bloggers to grow their fan base. It also helps cement them as an expert in their field.
The problem is, like most anything worth doing, it takes a lot of time. That’s where Podcast Producers step in.
As a Podcast Producer you may:
- Write a general outline of show/topic talking points
- Find and book guests
- Make sure audio quality is good
- Get podcasts found on places like iTunes
- Spread the word on social media
- And repeat, usually on a weekly basis
Many hours of work goes into just one hour long podcast. But, since podcasts are a tried and true way to grow a loyal audience of listeners, it is worth the effort and expense for established podcasters to outsource the work.
Twitter is a great way to find Podcast Producer positions (Buzzfeed was recently advertising for a Podcast Producer on Twitter!) I have seen a number of businesses and brands tweet their need for a Podcast Producer. Why?
Because people like working with people they already know.
Finding a follower or friend of a follower who is familiar with the business already makes you feel familiar to the brand and automatically makes you seem like a better fit for the job than someone who is not actively engaged.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, do not underestimate the power of a hashtag!
If you’re an avid listener of podcasts, you’re well on your way to being a Podcast Producer. If not, read up on what it takes to launch a successful podcast. Before you know it, you’ll be well on your way freelancing in one of the fastest growing business marketing mediums!
Virtual Event Coordinator
Virtual events are becoming more and more popular thanks to software that makes it possible for hundreds and even thousands of people to connect at the same time from locations around the world.
A lot of logistics go into planning a large-scale virtual event. And that’s why Virtual Event Coordinators are called upon to help put out any virtual fires and make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible. Some popular virtual events that are just waiting for your expertise include:
- Job fairs
- Webinars
- Trade shows
- Conferences
- Meetings
And many more virtual get-togethers are popping up every day. As a Virtual Event Coordinator, you may be in charge of picking a platform to host the event, work out a marketing plan, invite participants, secure sponsors, and make sure enough people “show up.”
If you have real world event planning experience, great! If not, no problem. You can become a Certified Virtual Event Planner (CVEP) over at Meetings Without Walls. Again, if you’re willing to learn, there’s always work to be found as a freelancer.
Periscope Consultant
Many brands, businesses, and bloggers are beginning to see the potential Periscope has in taking them to the next level. But, what is Periscope? In Periscope’s own words, it’s a platform that lets you “Explore the world through someone else’s eyes.”
Simply put, Periscope lets you sit in and watch as a person does a live broadcast. If you tune in early on, you can even leave comments, ask questions, give “hearts.” (You can replay videos under the “watch” tab for a 24-hour period, too.)
But to many users, Periscope is a complete mystery. It sounds intimidating to live broadcast yourself in front of potentially thousands of users. What do you say? How do you get an audience? What are the dos and don’ts of a successful broadcast?
These questions, and more, keep many people from trying their hand at Periscope while those brave enough to get going start seeing pretty impressive results by way of increased brand awareness and audience growth.
So, before everyone jumps on the Periscope bandwagon, start offering freelance services as a Periscope Consultant.
Answer questions that people may have, give them a strategy to help them make the most of their broadcasts, offer insights into what works and what doesn’t.
If you can deliver an action plan to would-be Periscope users that answers their questions and, in doing so, alleviates their fears, you can set yourself up with a freelance idea that few people are offering at this time.
As Periscope continues to gain popularity, there will be a high demand for consultants to help users build effective strategies. (Take Pinterest, for example, and how now is one of the fastest growing social media platforms and Pinterest Consultants make a full time living, and then some, by helping users craft perfect pins!).
If you’re not a Periscope user (yet) sign on and get active! One of the best ways to learn is by doing. Also, read up on some how-to guides and begin writing out your own freelance business plan and service offerings.
This is sure to be one of the next big freelance ideas that can easily turn into a lucrative business!
LeadPages Manager
Since launching in 2012, LeadPages has grown at such a rapid pace that it gets hundreds of new paid users each month. To help continue growth efforts, LeadPages secured more than 20 million dollars in funding earlier this year.
With so many active users and many more signing on each month to this popular tool that helps grow subscribers lists and sales leads, there is a need for LeadPages gurus to help novice users make the most of this subscription-based service.
If you’ve never used LeadPages before, sign up for their newsletter and learn a thing or two about the company. They also have a ton of freebies on their website like weekly podcasts, webinars, and LeadPages templates that you can use for all sorts of things like making the most of 404 pages, thanking users for signing up, and even using Facebook as a sales funnel.
LeadPages is compatible with all the major email service providers like MailChimp and Aweber and is also easily integrated with Facebook and WordPress (without touching any code!).
Needless to say, this is a valuable sales and list-building tool that any business or solopreneur can benefit from. But, many more users will never give LeadPages a try simply because they don’t know how to best incorporate it into their sales and marketing strategy.
That’s where you come in.
As a freelance LeadPages Manager, you can help users integrate the many tools and templates available into their own site, manage campaigns, and modify templates.
The best part? LeadPages has an entire Freelance Jobs Board available full of people needing help and willing to pay rates as high as $100 an hour for help (not too shabby!).
So what are you waiting for? Head on over to LeadPages and start learning everything you can about it. Once you’re comfortable using it yourself, you can start offering your services to others and make a pretty impressive living!

Hey there Ashlee.
You’re right, I hadn’t given these freelance ideas any thought. I like the sound of being a virutal event coordinator….I have experience coordinating events when I worked in corporate America so it shouldn’t be too hard to transition to a virtual environment. 🙂
I still haven’t joined the Persiscope craze so I would definitely need a Periscope consultant to catch up. 🙂
Thanks for sharing these suggestions. Way to think outside of the box! Hope you have a great day and weekend.
